Mp4 to Mp3 conversion for playback on FM Transmitters

My generation z offspring has discovered the joy of listening to talking books.

Sometimes the files are MP3, other times MP4. Itunes plays both formats, as so does her iPod, and the USB stick.

The iPod recharges when it’s plugged into the computer, so I only connect it when it needs recharging.

My FM transmitter for the car only plays MP3 or lower. For the sake of convenience it is easier to load the files onto a USB rather than carry around 11 or 12 discs. These audio files are not DRM.

My questions are these -
How much degradation will occur by converting the MP4 files back to MP3?
If you have used this process before - Can you recommend a software package to me?

Should you have a better solution to the problem, suggestions welcomed.
