I'm using Windows XP Home, SP2. This morning I received the MS automatic update for yesterday's security patch. If I recall, it downloaded / installed 5 items. They all installed perfectly and I restarted the computer.

Then I noticed there was a new MS update ready to be installed. I clicked on the icon and installed "Security update for Windows XP KB931784. I thought it had already been installed, but I did it again. A few minutes later the same update appeared again. I rebooted the computer (it didn't say I had to) and the same thing happened. My program files show the update is in there only once, but no matter how many times I restart the computer and / or install the update, it keeps coming back up as being ready to be installed.

Anyone have any ideas about this?

    Thanks!

OK...I went to the MS site and manually downloaded the update. The next window said I successfully downloaded / installed the update. The MU Results page shows I successfully installed 1 update. I rebooted the computer and within 30 seconds, the update icon appears in the toolbar showing I have updates ready to install (the same one again). On the MU page, I click on the update historylink, and it shows that KB931784 has been downloaded 6 times today. When I go to ADD & REMOVE PROGRAMS, it shows the update as being there once.

The only way I can stop it is to turn off the automatic updates (a temporary fix). As soon as I turn it back on, it tells me I have an update ready to install.

It may be time to run Hijack This???

Go to Add/Remove programs in the Control Panel and locate (KB931784), remove/uninstall it.

Empty your Temporary Internet files and restart the computer.

Disable your Anti-Virus and reinstall (KB931784) again and restart.

Well...it sounded like a good plan. I uninstalled the update, I also turned off the auto update, I cleaned out all cookies, cleaned out temp and temp int files, turned off my anti virus. I rebooted, manually downloaded / installed the update. Everything was great till I turned on the auto update and a few seconds later, I got the the update icon saying new updates are ready for downloading.

I ran: Panda Scan, Trend Micro and AVG...nothing was found.
I ran: Trend Micro Anti Spyware, Ad-Aware Pro, Spybot, Windows Defender and Windows Malicious Software Removal...nothing was found.
I ran Ccleaner, ATF-Cleaner as well as jv16 Power Tools to clean the registry.

This computer is cleaner than the day I built it. I'm stumped. If anyone has any other ideas, I'd love to hear them.

    Thanks

Are you sure that your anti-virus did not start when you restarted the computer? Do the steps again just like below.

    1. Remove / uninstall (KB931784).

    2. Empty your Temporary Internet files.

    3. Restart the computer.

    4. Now, disable your Anti-Virus.

    5. Reinstall (KB931784).

    6. Restart the computer again.

Matacumbie: Sorry, I listed my procedure incorrectly. I did turn off my anti -virus after the reboot.

Beezneez: I already tried your suggestion as well...to no avail.

I phoned MS PC Safety. The first guy was stumped, issued a case # and passed me up to a specialist. He was stumped, put me on lengthy hold a couple of times while he consulted with his fellow "specialists". They were stumped as well. My case has now been "escalated" and I'm expecting a phone call from a "MS Support Professional" tomorrow.

During the interim, I'm going to tear this apart and see if I can find what the problem is.

I'm having the exact same problem - I even tried the above proposed solutions and none worked. If anyone finds the answer, please post it here! Thanks.

I spent the entire morning speaking with people from MS...no solution. Then things got worse...the update corrupted my SATA drivers. Windows didn't recognize any hard drive and wouldn't proceed past bios.

A genius at MS told me my hard drive was bad and I should replace it. They're not aware of any update problems or issues. A friend of mine told me the Office update corrupted his .pst files and is unable to open Outlook. 3 different computers at my wife's office had the updates installed yesterday...this morning they all had update notices saying updates were ready to download...the same updates that were done yesterday!!!

I'm sure there will be a ton of people with issues.

Just musing because I too have the same problem with my wifes new Dell Inspiron Laptop, and have tried all solutions listed with no cure found yet. I am wondering if this is an issue with newer XP users, that have the option to upgrade to Vista.............Why because my older XP machine continues to upgrade with no problems.........Just a thought, how about the rest of you!!!!!

My version of XP is a couple of years old. I did the updates on my daughter's Dell desktop and it didn't have any problems. Hers is newer, but not that new.

I had a svchost problem a few weeks ago and fixed it with the method I posted. However yesterday Updates caused it to happen again so I went thru the process again and have now turned auto updates off . I will manually update in future. I am pretty sure the original problem was connected with Word.

My machine was doing the exact same thing, however after turning it OFF (not restarting) it installed the patch during the shutdown sequence. After booting up again it appears to be just fine.

Because this is an issue with a MS Update, you can call Microsoft PC Safety and speak with a warm-bodied American at Windows Live OneCare.

Of course you can turn off Auto Update, but that doesn't cure the MS problem. Yesterday I received a call from a MS service professional (4th tier), escalated cases. He wasn't able to help and passed my call over to someone more knowledgeable.

This "genius" ascertained that since my OS didn't "see" a hard drive and couldn't boot, my problem was obviously a bad hard drive...yeah right! Then the system tries to boot and doesn't see a keyboard. I asked him if that was the official MS stand on why my bad HD causes all these repeated attempts to download / install the same updates? He told me to buy a new hard drive and call back, then he'd try to help with the OS.

THE SOLUTION: after trying every option to get my computer to boot up, I finally got into the bios, arranged to boot first from my CD. Tried to repair Windows but kept getting a brief flash of the Blue Screen Of Death, then reboots...over and over. I then tried the 'Install Windows" option, which offers you a second chance at repairing the OS.

Here was my salvation: getting a screen that asked me about installing 3rd party drivers for SCSI or SATA, etc components. I press F6, insert the floppy with Western Digital SATA drivers, continue the loading of Windows. It took quite a while (similar to a new / full install). A couple of settings changed, but everything else was retained, went to MS site and manually selected almost 84 Mb of updates. The computer works perfectly, just like it did before I installed the 4/11 updates.

It appears that one of the MS updates was corrupted or caused a conflict and then either corrupted or removed the drivers for my WD SATA HD. Prior to the fiasco I ran a dozen anti virus, anti spyware, anti rootkit, etc programs and nothing was found. I ran them again today and the computer is still clean.

I appreciate the input and suggestions from fellow members. Thank you everyone for trying to help, and I hope other people experiencing update problems find their solution.

THANK YOU MICROSOFT!!!!! I think the next time I'll go with Apple.

Well, I had the same problem. I'm not sure if it works for everyone but here is what I did.
I searched for KB931784.log. It contained the following error: -
KB931784 Setup encountered an error: The update.ver file is not correct.

I then searched for 'update.ver', the result showed a lot of files. I deleted the entire C:\WINDOWS\$hf_mig$\KB931784 folder and did not receive the error again after installing for the last time.

    Hi

I would try blackstones suggestion and se how you go then if you get the same update showing again then review the microsoft update.log its in this location C:\Windows\Windows Update.log and look for the last failed update error message code and post it here.

It may also be wise at this point to run system file checker at the run prompt type SFC /scannow ( amy or will need XP cd )

As I said...I did a Windows XP repair. Beside the repeated attempts to install the same Update, my bios and HD drivers got screwed up as well. It took a long time to finally access my bios. At times it didn't find any keyboard connected and the OS did find any hard drive. rolleyes

    It's all fixed now. :)

I've attached a copy of my Windows Update Log from 4/11 when this occurred. If any one can decipher it and determine what happened I'm sure inquiring minds would like to know. confused

    Microsoft Security Update KB931784

No matter how many times I installed it, I continuously got an “Updates are ready for your computer” icon in the lower taskbar saying that KB931784 is ready to download. After installing it six times, I finally found an answer to the problem on a yahoo discussion website:

    1. Go to the Microsoft Update download website: www.microsoft.com/downloads
    2. Enter the Microsoft Update number, e.g., KB931847 in the search block BELOW the blue “Download Center” header and click “Go”
    3. Download the update file to your hard drive, e.g. to folder c:\0
    4. Get into DOS (Command Prompt) mode.
    5. Type the path and name of the update file, with a space and an “/o” operator, e.g.,
    c:\0\WindowsXP-KB931784-x86-ENU.exe /o
    6. Press ENTER to install the update from the Command Prompt mode
    7. It will install the update, and will quit asking to download and install it.
