I thought I got rid of MS anti-malware programs (windows defender, etc.), but today, during a windows update, I noticed a MRT.exe hogging about 70% of CPU. This program is not (explicitly?) listed in add/remove programs, and it's of non-standard size. 17,230 KB (located in c:\windows\system32), whereas the standard sizes are 905216 bytes (50% of all occurrence), 427360 bytes, 1056768 bytes per file.net: http://www.file.net/process/mrt.exe.html

so should i keep this, or delete/uninstall it?

p.s. the file was last modified a week ago, so i assume windows update didn't just download it, although it may have triggered it.

    On edge,
please wait until I can answer the driver question in your other thread. The two might be related.
    Thanks.

sure, thank you. I'm just doing clean-up after the Trojan attack, and subsequent disabling of all extra programs, installing of a bunch of extra anti-malware, running of all sorts of cleaners, and fending off of the Trojans (at least the ones I could find) - by the way, AVG anti-spyware found at the last one(?) in an already existing emule download file (the sketchy type), plus I think there it said something about infections in my Norton protected files (c:recycler\nprotect??? or something), and/or system restore backup files ('by the way #2,' system restore didn't work earlier either, maybe still doesn't). - I'm not sure about the specifics because I was had to travel my initial post about the Trojans and I asked someone else to run AVG's complete anti-spyware scan, but they didn't save the log, except I think I found it in AVG's files, but then I lost it or it could cleaned off by ccCleaner or one of those - I'm left the computer on to do another scan this morning when I left for office (will post log when I get home if it's done).

anyway, now I'm at the stage where I'm a) still running the last few scans, and also b) uninstalling extra anti-malware, and old programs I should have removed a long time ago... you know, getting rid of those semi-empty folders left behind after uninstalls, trying to find out and turn off all sorts of useless(?) background programs that I don't even know what they do and such... the registry could use a huge wash as well, but it's too risky right now... maybe after everything else is taken care off...
