Not sure where to post this, please to move to appropriate area.

I was recently introduced to the article "How to deal with startup processes - do not use MSconfig" and now struggling to understand what this really means for me.

Below are programs that are useful when I need them, but not worthy of being launched when I boot up. I certainly don't want to uninstall them, and have used ccleaner to disable them.

Should I run MSconfig to put my PC into Normal Startup mode and then use Startup CPL to disable them or is there a better method?

    Thanks!

If Ccleaner has disabled the from start up and you are not having any ill affects from it, you should just leave it as is. Ccleaner is what I use to customize my start menu too.

My understanding from this thread http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=149804 is that ccleaner should NOT be used to control startups. I'm a bit confused. I've used ccleaner to control startups on a number of PCs among friends and co-workers. I thought I was being clever and helping people out.

CCleaner, Startup CPL, and msconfig are used as troubleshooting tools. Once you discover the program(s) that are causing problems at startup, you need to fix the offending program(s).
    1. Go into the program, as an example, Adobe Reader, and turn off "check for updates" or "load at startup". Reboot and see if it is now removed from the startup folder.
    2. Some programs have no options for you to alter the behavior; in that case, go into the startup folder and remove the program (it is a shortcut to the actual program and not the program itself).
    C:\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
also check for each individual user because there might be a program starting for one user causing a problem for that user.

Thanks for the reply. Although I don't have problems at startup. I just want to have the PC boot as fast as possible.
Also, I thought Startup CPL was the tool to use instead of msconfig and ccleaner to control startups. Still confused...

Honestly, I almost wish I never read that thread, as I haven't had any problems using ccleaner for many years.

Anyone else want to chime in?

    Hi

best option IMHO it to either delete a startup from the list that is not needed, this does nto delete the app, just its ability to start at boot... OR to disable with StartupCPL and for Windows Vista/7/8 you will need t use the standalone version of StartupCPL HERE to do this effectively.

Reason not to use MSConfig is that its a troubleshooting tool mainly and if you uninstall any software that you have disabled via MSconfig then it will be orphaned in msconfig and difficult to remove afterwards.

My thoughts on this are personal and you can take or leave them but if you do not wish an app to start WHY disable it, just delete it (in some cases adobe/java etc when an update comes it adds the startup again, but then delete it again) as you do not wish it to start.

From your list I would delete from startup (can use CCleaner to delete from startup) the following

    WinampAgent
    QuickTime Task Apple Inc.
    HPCam_Menu CyberLink
HP Software Update Hewlett-Packard (can manually run this)
Adobe Reader Speed Launcher (never speeded up anything!)
FlashPlayerUpdate (update if and when needed manually)
Messenger (Yahoo!) Yahoo! Inc. (if you are not on this permanently then why have it start in the background, waste of resources, start it when YOU need it, not when the apps wants)

    @DavidGP
Yup, I agree with you and already disabled everything you mentioned with ccleaner.
I'm done with this topic and moving on.
    Thanks everyone!
