Is it possible to boot my system into the MSDOS mode? Is there even such a thing? Can I do this from the "F8" option during start-up? I am running Windows XP Pro with SP2.
    Thank You

XP doesn't include any 16 bit code so you can't boot into DOS.

You can use the command prompt, Recovery Console, or create boot disks.

What are you trying to do?

XP has a nifty feature that allows you to create a ms dos boot disc3.5 floppy from the format menu . Right click on floppy and choose format

I am trying to bypass the Windows login password prompt. I was recently told that it is impossible. I don’t think anything is impossible; something’s are just more difficult than others. I originally thought that if I could boot into MSDOS mode I could delete all .pwl files and just skip the prompt. Any ideas?
    Thanks for your help.

That's a topic you won't get much help for here, for obvious reasons.

    Understandable.

For what reason are you trying to get passed the logon prompt? This is a grey area, IMHO.

There are legitamate (sp?) ways to bypass the login prompt, without using any 3rd party tools. Be it xp home or pro. As long as the admin account is NOT password protected.

I am an MIS major at the local university. During a discussion about password recovery, one of the guys (a guy who as a reputation for being a pretentious know-it-all, who often ends up with his foot in his mouth) said it is impossible. I just can’t believe that it can’t be done. Finals are this coming week and I want to prove this guy wrong before summer break comes and I won’t see him any more. The professor said he wasn’t going to get into it with us.Thanks in advance.Adam

There are a couple of Linux based forensic tools, that will allow you to change or remove the passwords on NT based systems.
