My aunt, who is computer illiterate, tells me she has started getting a popup box that looks official, headed Microsoft Security Essentials, indicating that she has a virus and needs to download a program to kill it. She does not use MSE, so I advised her not to click on anything until I could do some checking. But she is clearly infested based on some other actions that her PC is taking (shutting down programs, not allowing downloads, etc.)

    I found this link:

which is fine, but my question is why would Microsoft direct you to a different, third party website (bleepingcomputers.com) to resolve an issue that is using their name in vain? I would have thought they would be on anyone using their name in vain like a guinea on a cutworm.

Does anyone have any insight into this?

    Thanks.

The person who posted is a very experienced malware fighter. There's nothing wrong with her posting what she did on the website.

Looks like your aunt needs to follow these instructions.

Oh, I was not discounting the advice from the poster at bleepingcomputer. I was just wondering why Microsoft itself did not have some cure for this matter since it uses their product name (Microsoft Security Essentials) to initiate the malware.

    Thanks.
