MSI motherboard swap

Hi,

I run XP sp2 and my motherboard, MSI KT6V had a lightning strike recently, most things still work but none of my PCI interface cards works even though they do work on another PC at all. Is there any fix or workaround for this? I expect the answer to be no so I have managed to obtain a similar motherboard which does work, and MSI K7T266 Pro-R.
If I use this as a replacement, will I need to obtain new drivers or is the
swap going to be more complicated?

When replacing a Mobo you will in theory be setting up a new computer so you will need drivers.
The best thing i can suggest is to backup your present system to a second or external drive then when you change the mobo you will be able to search the backup for any relevant drivers, the rest you will have to search for using Device manager.

The other problem you may encounter is that the activation key for your XP will not work on another Mobo because it thinks you are trying to install it on a second PC.

 

Microsoft used to allow telephone activation when replacing motherboard, if the same, I believe, but as support is now..... Worth a try, but otherwise, uninstal the chipset, and graphics driver before closing down the old one- sometimes helps.
