Anytime I try to install a program that uses MSI, it gives me an error that it encountered a problem. This only started recently and I have no idea what caused it. I have tried:

    Method 1

Unregister Windows Installer, and then reregister Windows Installer. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. On the "Start" menu, click "Run:.
    2. In the "Open" box, type "msiexec /unreg", and then press ENTER.
    3. On the "Start" menu, click "Run".
    4. In the "Open" box, type "msiexec /regserver", and then press ENTER.

    Method 2

Upgrade to Windows Installer version 2 or newer version. To do this, follow these steps:

    Method 3

Use Windows Installer CleanUp Utility to uninstall the failed product.

    Method 4

Empty user and system "temp" folders.
    1. Empty "%systemdrive%\temp" folder.
    2. Empty "%systemdrive%\%windir%\temp" folder.
    3. Empty "%systemdrive%\Documents and Settings\%username%\Local Settings\Temp".

    Method 5
the Run box, type (pressing okay after each one) :

    net stop wuauserv

    Repeat for the following:
    regsvr32 wuapi.dll
    regsvr32 wups.dll
    regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
    regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
    regsvr32 wucltui.dll
    regsvr32 wuweb.dll
    regsvr32 MSXML3.dll
    regsvr32 qmgr.dll
    regsvr32 qmgrprxy.dll
    regsvr32 jscript.dll

    net start wuauserv

    Method 6

    Run Dial-a-fix

    Method 7

Go to the link below and run # 94 (Windows Installer Fix) on the left-hand side.

To make sure that the Service is not disabled, was my first move.

Disable your Firewall / Anit-Virus and try a installation.

Anyone else? Is there perhaps a substitute that I can download somewhere?

    no alternative.

    Manually reinstall the Windows Installer.

    ren msi.dll msi.old
    ren msiexec.exe msiexec.old
    ren msihnd.dll msihnd.old

Under C:\windows\system32 and C:\windows\system32\dllcache. You gotta rename them in dllcache first.

Then expand them from your XP CD.

    expand x:\i386\msi.dl_ C:\windows\system32\msi.dll
    expand x:\i386\msihnd.dl_ C:\windows\system32\msihnd.dll
    expand x:\i386\msiexec.ex_ C:\windows\system32\msiexec.exe

Where X is the letter of your optical drive containing the CD.

    Reboot.

    Installer Windows Installer 3.1 v2.

    Reboot.

Make sure the Windows Installer service can be started:

    Start, run, services.msc.

Start Windows Installer from the list.

    Any errors?

    See if that helps.

All commands run from the cmd.exe prompt.
