    Sirs

MSN Messenger seems to be sending Instant Messages to my contacts list.. Whilst I am not logged into the darned thing.

They appear to be pointing to various sites asking my contacts to look at "My Pictures" or "Videos" that I have supposedly uploaded.

Attached are the logs from SAS, MalwareBytes, ComboFix and MG tools.

I would really appreciate your assistance as I am convinced it may not be my machine.

Hi and welcome. We are currently reviewing your logs and will get back to you with a set of instructions as soon as possible. Thanks for your patience during this time. And whilst I will indeed check thru your logs, I can advise you that when this sort of thing happens on the Instant Messengers, the best thing to do would be for you to tell your contacts to block and delete you from their list, for you to import your contacts to a text file, create a new ID/account, and let your contacts have the new information.

    Thanks
    Kestrel13!

It's as I thought, your logs are clean, just a couple thing to do to neaten up.

    1) Please go to Add or Remove programs and uninstall the following softwares:

MessengerPlus! 3 <-- as per requested in step 1 of the R&R.

    Also uninstall the below:

    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 4
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
    • Java(TM) 6 Update 11
    • Java(TM) 6 Update 2
    • Java(TM) 6 Update 3
    • Java(TM) 6 Update 5
    • Java(TM) 6 Update 7
    • Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1

    2) Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

O15 - Trusted Zone: http://cms.sja.org.uk <--- because we don't reccommend placing any site into your TZ

    After clicking Fix exit HJT.

    3) Now reboot your machine and install the most current and up to date version of Java available here at the below link:

    Java Runtime 6

    4) Now Run Ccleaner!

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommed you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
      • Delete the C:\combofix folder from combofix (if it exists)
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    7. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

You could also uninstall MSN Messenger 7.0 delete all related folders, reboot, and then install the current version of Messenger which is Windows Live Messenger.

    Sirs

Many many thanks for your assistance.

I finally Managed to track this one down to an account hijack. (My good ladies')

A simple password change and lo It has all stopped.

I have taken on board a number of your recommendations. Except the Trusted Zone one. I have complained to the site admins about this on a number of occasions but so far have been unable to get them to budge on the reasons behind it.

    Once again many thanks

    Derek

The reasoning behind this (and I certainly dont place ANY site into my TZ either) is because what if that site becomes infected? Then you're putting your machine at risk....
