... interesting, it went down completley about half an hour ago, all my contacts went offline, and then all came back online mysteriously about 2 minutes later after I signed out and in again...

Some people can't talk to other people, some people can't talk to anyone, so my entire contact list is communicating by changing screen names. lol.

And now I can't sign on at all.

    Smell that?

Its gasoline, spreading throughout the thread.

If it wasn't true, then Photoshop wouldn't cost as much as it does.

If it wasn't true, then 3ds max wouldn't be so ungodly expensive.

Don't even go there with MS.

    Lets give some examples.

Lets say you have Star Office, Open Office and MS Office to choose from. All are free.

--Don't even tell me you wouldn't choose Office if it was free.

Lets say you have Linux, OSX and Windows XP for free.

    --Most people would choose XP.

Why? MS makes easy to use and for the most pat pretty darn stable software. Definately NOT the most secure, however. The thing is, user friendly, and secure generally don't go hand in hand. If the software was secure, people would find other things to bitch about because its the big bad wolf, Microsoft.

Know whats funny? Had Yahoo or AIM gone down, they would not see as bad as plublicity.

    Why do people bash MS?

--Because it is trendy. It earns you brownie points with the geeks, and makes you look cool in their circle.

No service can run forever without a hiccup.

If linux or mac were as popular or even more popular than MS, then when they went down or had a problem everyone would flame them. Its not MS' fault that everyone targets them. the reason they do is because people use MS, more than linux and mac. if someone targeted mac or linux and there was a virus spreading around with their community, no one would talk about it, and it sure as hell wouldn't be on the news that night. the reason ms gets flamed all the time is because use it and its popular.

and like adrynalyne said, people use it because its what they are used to and its what they have grown accustomed to. if linux systems all across the world went down right now because of the worst virus known to man, no one would even care. you wouldn't even open your mouth. but since ms is so popular, all this happens to them. they are criticized for everything they do and every decision they make, whether its good or bad. but that shouldn't be a reason to flame them.

and i totally agree with you that if aim or yahoo or even icq went down, no one would care. no one would say a word, because its not microsoft.

and yet other people think that they have the right to flame ms for crashes and what not because they use it all the time. yet, almost 99% of the people making the comments have yet to try linux or mac or another os besides microsoft. They assume that microsoft should be absolutely perfect.

Think of it like criticizing your artwork, if you were the best artist around. if you had made millions off previous artwork and were globally known because of it. and then you made a new painting that had a slight mudge in the corner. the people would criticize you and hate you for this. they would be disgusted. and yet, they would continue to put copies of your artwork in their living rooms. all the time, hating you for that one smudge.

my suggestion, before you start criticizing microsoft for such a small mistake, why not take a look at the other things they have done. don't look at the whole as a part, look at the whole as a whole.

    :)

i wasn't saying they weren't good, i was saying they are running a virtual monolopy. macs are expensive and most "average" computer users cringe at the thought of having to learn another o/s. MS plays on that, sure they make it very easy i agree with that, but it is so expensive, thats why bill gates is so damn rich, and i have to pay so much for all thier software. of course i like open office and linux, only reason i have xp on this machine is because my parent's use it too, so they paid for MS XP Home.

M.S. is very good at marketing what is usually underdeveloped, second rate products (the advantage of a monopoly market). E.g. S.P.2 - it's free - and it suxs, i.mo., due to incompatibility with a lot of software, and in parts buggy code.

X.P. is a nice O.S. in most ways, but M.S.'s O.S.'s didn't start out that way, did they? Remember the first Win '95, the first version of Win '98, M.E., etc. They tend to do a lot of their Beta testing on the public.

If Linux was as compatible as they would have us believe, I would use it in a flash. So would many others, I suspect. Competition is always a good thing, and open sourcing a program is the fastest and best way to get it developed - though it may not be the most profitable.

Linux is free, if your time is worth nothing.

Sp2 works fine for me, my wife, my family, and my friends.

I'm the only computer literate among all of them.

What does that say to you?

    1. Blame the devlopers who were warned to get their software up to snuff, and didn't.
    2. Blame the user.

Right. Linux, as far as I'm concerned is a RSN OS. In my view, its not finished. I've used distros before, and I simply don't like them. I don't like the fact you need to edit text files in order to get the thing working AT ALL. I don't mind having to edit text files to tweak it, thats fine, but not providing a GUI for the commonest of tasks, like installing drivers... is foolish to say the least.

I like Windows. Some people say its "the easy OS" but once you know a bit about it, you can get as complicated as you like with it.

Networking, for example. What you could do is set up a home network with a hub and 2 computers, just like that, with no knowlege whatsoever. BUT on the other hand you can create a huge corporate network, complete with WAN PPP links to other sites, multiple domains... the works.

Linux is fine, as long as you're used to it, I guess. I tried to set up a server using Linux and I was at it for 3 days straight... Admitadley I had no training, nor a reference book to work with or anything. But, with the exact same lack of resources, I set up a Windows 2003 server in about an hour.
