Some programs fail on me, with the message 'MSVCP71.dll not found' or some such.

I run Vista Ultimate 64 bit - where do I get MS-whatsit, and how do I get it to where it needs to be, please?

    Hi

The issues arrises as msvcp71.dll is not part of any redistributable from Microsoft and should really be supplied as part of the 3rd party app, but many devs forget about this thinking its in the OS already.

But attached below is the one I have downloaded, unzip and place into the System32 folder and also as you have x64 Vista into the SysWOW64 folder, in C:Windows

Shouldnt need to regsiter the dll, but if you do then Start and type into the Start Search box regsvr32 c:\windows\System32\msvcp71.dll and regsvr32 c:\windows\SysWOW64\msvcp71.dll *note the space after 2 and before C:

Thanks, Halo. I have put the file in the two folders as you say, and, at a quick check, all seems OK without needing to register. Don't expect to have to bother you again on this.

My computer was built for me by my son, from individual components, so there was no OEM builder involved. (I wonder what else might be missing, that falls between Microsoft and OEM, in the same way!)

    Thanks again

Um - I think I have followed instructions to the letter - and repeated - but a problem! :cry

Just loading the file into the two folders didn't work - still got the error message 'Not found'

    So I tried registering

On trying to register, got the error message 'The module "C:\Windows\System32\MSVCP71.dll" failed to load - Make sure the binary is stored at the specified path or debug it to check for problems with the binary or dependent .DLL files. - Access is denied.'

All looks hunky-dory with the file in System32 and SysWOW64, the file looks to be stored properly in both places - so I am at a loss.

And, yes, I realised after I had posted, that the 'OEM' this was a mistake.

Any chance that there is some simple harmless program I can install that carries MSCVP71 with it - and get it in that way?

Weirder still - I thought I'd remove the file from SystemWOW64, (and later, System32) and put it in again - in case.

The file list in SystemWOW64 doesn't show the file. Doing a search on Start/enter the filename, fails to find it in SystemWOW64 - BUT when i try to paste it in, get an error message to say it's already in!! If it's there, I can't see it. I can see lots of other .dll files, even a msvcp60.dll right next to where this one should go.

    Hi DaveRM

Sorry my fault, put my hands up, too much in head and forgot that in Vista its not as easy to re-register a dll, what you have to do is to open an elevated CMD prompt, to do this type in the Start Search box CMD then when CMD shows in the list right click it and choose Run as Administrator, then pop in the regsvr32 commands and links to files so:

    regsvr32 c:\windows\System32\msvcp71.dll
    regsvr32 c:\windows\SysWOW64\msvcp71.dll

    and see how you go.

*try unhiding files and system files to make them show up*

Also what applications are asking for this file? try copying the dll to that applications Program Files folder (no need to register it)

Could try also installing .Net 3.5 but likely you may have updated to it via Windows Update but try it anyhow http://majorgeeks.com/Microsoft_.NET_Framework_d3559.html

I've tried your fixes, Halo - but still no joy.

I have been called away from home for a week - won't be able to pick up the threads till next week-end sometime. I'll be in touch again when I can.

Thanks for help so far - it is appreciated.

    Hi DaveRm

Do let us know the apps that your trying that give this error, but in the mean time I will look for an app that comes with that dll so that when installed it may correct this, also I would contact the devs of say one of the app and ask if its Vista x64 compatible as some apps are not.

    Thanks - will do

However ... tomorrow, bright and early, I go away for a week - so it'll be a little while before I can get back onto this.

Thanks for help so far - and I'll come back with the info you want ASAP
