Hi! My mother has a WinXP computer, but it's broken. I also have a WinXP laptop there. My mother uses MS-Works on her computer, and I want to set up MS-Word and MS-Works on the laptop for her. However, I don't have the install disks for them--just for Win98. Where can I find it for a low price? If I can get it, I will try to set up the software and a user profile for her. If I can get Command Prompt to work on her computer, I can extract her documents off her computer and onto a flash drive and transfer them. I'm somewhat familiar with the Command Prompt. I just don't know how to delete directories. :(

    HarryPotter...

Have you tried ebay? I was looking at purchasing an old MS bundle the other day that included Works and Money, and there were numerous listings for $20 or less. I too misplaced an installation disk :(. Plenty of old Word versions there too...

Which version of MS Works is on the broken computer?
And how broken is the computer?

I don't know, and I don't know. I think she's using an XP version, and I don't know how broken the computer is. My mother says she can't start it up. I may or may not get the command prompt. I'll know the next time I go to her house, which is sometimes on the weekends.

    Keep us posted.
She doesn't need both MS Word and MS Works. The latter was discontinued in 2009.
And there's the free WPS Office.

I thank you. However, my mother has limited ability to handle the computer. She can't handle two ways of doing the same thing. I think she'd want the same that she had.

BTW, I tried eBay for MS Word. Didn't find exactly the item for which I was looking.

BTW, how much for MS Word for my Win8.1/64 laptop? I probably only need the standard version.

Could it be that your mother had something like this before?

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/MICROSOFT-W...603678?hash=item2a5cdcd89e:g:nsAAAOSwxN5WW7FE

I had Works 7, and files created with it (.wks,.wdb,.wps, etc.) are supported by MS Office 2010 and by OpenOffice and LibreOffice. The above has Works 8, so it should be even better. The bundle does come with Word, too...

If you want to try out the bundle inexpensively, here is an older version of the same suite going for a very low price:

I am after an XP version. I have a Win98 version, though, but my mother is not used to that version, and I don't know if the XP versions' (MS-Word and MS-Works) files are readable by the Win98 versions. :(

I thank you. It would be useful to me. I'm worried about the learning curve for my mother, though. If I remember, the next time I call her, I'll tell her about it. :)

The 2006 bundle I linked to is for XP. It comes with Works 8. This Works version was actually designed for Windows 98SE, Windows 2000, Windows ME, and Windows XP. This could be a slightly newer version of Works than your mother had, but versions of Works are always backward compatible when it comes to file compatibility. Here is a list of files that can be used in Works 7. Works 8 like in the bundle should be roughly the same:

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/884182

I have used Works 7 as in the less expensive 2004 bundle linked previously (ebay link) above, and it is an extremely good program and one of my favorite programs out there. Because it's a little older, your mother might recognize it as closer to what she had. Anyway, all of the various versions of Works (5.0 and up) should open the files made on your mother's PC, and the programs are very similar.

I love Works 7.0, especially since LibreOffice and OpenOffice established support for them and now open the files. MS actually did go back and add support for them in Office 2010, too.

Then you can't go wrong with WPS Office.
It looks just like MSO 2003. More importantly, it has the same commands and they are in the same locations.

Uhh...it's kind of large. Is there a smaller version? BTW, the look-alike may help my mother. :)

Come to think of it, you're right. There is enough hard drive space on my WinXP laptop to store the install. Sorry!

    If I remember correctly...
The install is less than 200 MB. And you can always delete the many templates if not needed.
Also, during installation, you can select which application(s) to install. If your mom doesn't need the spreadsheet and presentaion programs, unselect them. That should reduce the install to less than 100 MB.

    That's good. Thank you! :)

I'm not even going to begin the "still using XP" lecture.

    Good luck...
