Multimedia Audio Control Driver gone

Help, I am having serious issues....my daughter opened an email with a virus that presented itself as windows xp and completely destroyed my sound. I have no driver for the multimedia...comes up with a question mark and I don't know how to get it back without having to buy some kind of program...this happened with my old computer..and I was able to reinstall on that one..but this one doesn't let me... unless I want to restore the entire system..which I don't because that means losing files and games and printer drivers that I can't find the disk for anymore...can someone please help me? It is a Gateway computer GM4019E

Personally, I think a virus-free, safe, and clean PC is more important than hearing blips, beeps, clicks, and whatnot.

I had already done some of the steps given...and I finished the rest of what was posted so can you tell me how to get the sound working?

First, download and install your chipset drivers and restart when it's done. Then download and install the audio drivers and restart when done. For best results, first go to Add/Remove Programs and remove any Realtek sound drivers that you see listed before installing any drivers. Good luck! Let us know how it goes!
