I just recently did a fresh install of xp home on my computer and I reloaded all my drivers. Starting with the chipset as I was supposed to and everything installed fine. I ended up having to replace my CMOS battery and once I got the computer back up and running it has a big yellow ? with the ! next to multimedia audio controller. I've tried using all my dics to reinstall drivers I've uninstalled it and reinstalled audio drivers. I've tried a few driver programs and the dell website with my service tag I just can't seem to figure it out. I have a Dell Dimension 4600 running on windows xp home sp3

    Hi

Following on from the above post, do install your Chipset driver (from the link supplied) first and reboot, then if you do not have SP3 for XP install the UAA HD Audio driver patch from HERE and then the Audio driver again from the supplied link.

If you have SP3 for Windows XP then you dont need the UAA driver just the Chipset and then Audio.

Reboot and test audio, if its not working then check in Services (Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services that the Windows Audio driver is Started and set to Automatic as the Startup Type (also under the Dependancides tab, check all those services for being Started and Startup type as Automatic)

I re installed the chipset and audio drivers but it's still the same and windows audio driver is started and set to automatic. I didn't see a dependancies tab though

go into Bios and look through the tabs and look for onboard audio...see if its enabled..if not enable it and then hit F10 (save and exit) and then let it reboot

another question though...Is you’re audio plug on the I/O plate or in an Expansion slot?

There was nothing for onboard audio only sound and that's set to on and it's on the expansion slot

Ok...You have a sound card, not onboard Audio......Go hereand download Everest http://majorgeeks.com/download4181.html and copy and paste what it gives you....it'll tell what sound card you have

Caliban I don't need no steenkin' title!

    Greetings, Whatsername851039.

Your Dell Service Tag #1XYCY41 shows that you do indeed have Analog Devices ADI 198X Integrated Audio.

    Couple of quick questions:

If you enable sound in BIOS and use the audio plug located on the I/O plate, do you get sound?

    Have you tried headphones?

Not trying to be facetious - just trying to get a handle on what's going on here...;)

It's ok actually no I haven't tried headphones lol I guess because usually cleaning my room and such I have the sound coming from the speakers but I'll give it a try

    You do have sound?

I apologize - I was assuming you had no audio...

Can I tell you guys I feel like an idiot this little plastic piece has been on the back of my computer for years and I took it off and wow there were jacks there! So I have 2 sound cards or what? I know very little about my own computer except that I can use photoshop and listen to music at the same time lol The headphones I/O sound works fine but I still wonder what happened to my other one it worked before I replaced the CMOS

No need to feel like an idiot - we've all been there, done that...;)

You obviously have both onboard audio (the ADI 198x) and a PCI sound card (Creative Sound Blaster Live! 5.1 Digital). Since your onboard audio is working, do you wish to leave it like that, or do you wish to continue to troubleshoot the Device Manager issue?

I'm glad I at least have sound from one I have music on constantly lol I would like to find out what happened to my other one though if we could this has never happened to me before I've done several system dumps and just installed my drivers like so but this was the first time I replaced the CMOS battery. Everything in the BIOS seems ay ok though

I tried the one from 05 on the soundblaster site but it said the same thing that there is no card installed but I used my sound blaster live disc when I installed my drivers again. I used the diagnostic it says Hardware detection: PASS but wave driver, midi driver, mixer driver, direct sound 3d driver and mixer settings check failed.

    .
    Good morning.

    Try this:

    1. Uninstall everything related to the Creative sound card that's listed in Add/Remove Programs.
    2. Download and run Driver Sweeper, have the program thoroughly scrub any Creative references.
    3. Download and run CCleaner, both the files and registry cleaners.
    4. Power down the machine and physically remove the Creative sound card.
    5. Restart the machine and check your onboard audio and Device Manager.

At this point, do you have onboard sound and is the Device Manager flag gone? This is critical - this should let us know if the warning is pertaining to the Creative device, or if it's flagging something else.

If, however, everything looks good, continue with:

    6. Power down the machine and physically reinstall the Creative card.
    7. Upon restart, the Add New Hardware Wizard should take over and Windows should install its own Creative software.
    8. Check Creative sound, and check the Device Manager.

If at this point everything looks good, then the option to install any further Creative software is just that - an option. If, however, problems are present, let us know.
