multiple blue screen crashes and error messages

Hello, I have started having problems with my laptop. Difficult to say exactly when how and what they started as a couple of isolated incidents slowly grew into a problem!
About 5 weeks ago I received about 20 emails which appeared to be returns undelivered. I'd opened a couple before realizing I had so many and that I did not send the original. Because of this I ran scans and asked Major geeks malware forum to review them.

After this I ran through their "How to Protect yourself from malware!" so though I was pretty secure.

Over the last couple of weeks I have had a few error messages and things like "Incredimail [for example] has encountered a problem and been closed". I also had a blue screen close down, so decided to run through the whole "read & run me first" instructions MG provide. I found multiple virus' and again posted to MG malware forum for help.

I now appear to be virus free but still do not know where they came from. I have been advised to try this forum for help now.

Apart from what has gone before, yesterday I had 2 blue screen close downs both whilst running McAffee scans.
I have lots of "not responding" episodes but these are usually fleeting and free up quickly again.
For a while today I could not cut or copy & paste, but after closing down and re-opening the program I can now.
In control panel I right clicked the toolbar to look for the language bar. I clicked on google toolbar and it all disappeared totally. Can't get any tool-bars back now, right click on the 'area' does nothing.
I have looked at 'system restore' but there is only 1 restore point dated 3/9/10 and is a 'system image restore point' and is type=backup. I do not have an option of making a restore point.

I don't think I have installed any programmes recently except scanning type ones and these I download via MG's site.

I tried to do a back up to my external hard drive but was unable to complete this. Instead I just copied important documents. Now I am wondering if the external drive is infected and caused the porblems? I am not sure how to scan it thoroughly, and of course am concerned about plugging it back into my laptop.

Can you help please. I am sorry this is so long but have tried to give as much info as possible.

    My system info is:-

Are things like flash, your browser, your pdf reader and java up to date? Infections can come through holes in programs you use.

If you are not sure if those programs are patched, go here
    http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/
download this program and allow it to scan your computer (you need to be connected to the internet). It might take awhile, be patient.
After it is done, you get a report about security and what programs need patching or uninstalling.

Hello plodr, thanks for the help.
I have done as suggested and installed some patches/updates to adobe Flash and Open Office. There are 2 others (in advanced mode) which I have installed but they still remain on the list when I rescan. They are Google Chrome 7.x and Microsoft XML core services (MSXML) 4.x.
What happens to all the ones which have no known cure?

What do I need to do now?

How can I check the external hard drive?

    Thanks very much, Jan

You would need to have the external drive plugged into the computer and then run a DEEP scan using MBAM. You could also run the online eSet scan and allow it to scan that drive as well:

    eSet Online Scan.

Tomorrow is patch Tuesday; maybe MS will have a patch for XML core services. If not, google to see if there is a workaround to turn something off and make you safer.

Thanks TimW & plodr, I have run a full MABM scan on the external hard-drive which is clear. I will soon run the ESet scan.

On the main laptop hard-drive (C) I have tried about 4 times to run a full MABM scan but each time it has ended in a blue screen close down. As I was not watching throughout the scans I didn't know where in the scan this happened. I have now watched to try to find out where in the scan this happened. The blue screen information does not stay on screen long enough to copy the info but the scan stopped at:- (by the way I cannot find a backslash so have substituted with forward slashes)

windows/winsxs/amd64-microsoft-windows-naturallanguage6_31bf3856ad35_6.1.7600.16385_none_f9cfc5e_ ......................................... (that is all I had time to get).

Is this enough for you to be able to identify a problem?

I have tried again today to do the patches I mentioned earlier but still cannot do this.

Should I go ahead with the ESet scans?

    Appreciate your help, Jan

My understanding is to run a quick MBAM scan.
    Did you do that?

    Hello again,
I ran the ESet scan as directed. I left the laptop when it was around 85% and came back to find a blue screen had occurred. I set it away again and it got to 99% then blue screened again. During this time it found 2 problems. ? it may have got to 100% but I could not get a log. I ran it again and this time stayed throughout. It did not find anything but at the end it did go to the finish screen so I could see the quarantine of the previous scan, but there were no options to 'export to text file'. The items were:-
    C:/program files (x86)/java/jre6/lib/rt.jar (trojan)
    C:/mgtools/process.exe [which I think I can ignore?].

Today when I turned on, it went straight to CHKDSK. the only issue there appeared to be was "deleting corrupt attribute record (128,"") from file recovery segment 1640. Is this significant?

I have tried numerous times to patch/update the issues on Secunia.
    Google Chrome 7.x and
Microsoft XML core services MSXML 4.x
I even uninstalled them as I do not think I use them, but they are still showing up on a Secunia scan.

I can copy or cut a section from an email but cannot paste it into i Google. The paste option is grayed out.

I have lost the toolbar in windows explorer pages eg control panel. Please can you help me get this back. I have tried right click on the area but there isn't even an area!

I have no backslash on my keyboard. Can you help there at all? Some other things are in different places, but can't find that anywhere! The laptop was bought in Holland with a qwerty keyboard. The system is set up for UK keyboard. The " is where the @ is and vice versa. The £ is found on the hask key but I cannot find a key that will give me hash!

Sorry there seems to be so many issues. Are they all connected?

Look forward to your advice, Jan

Hello, I have had another 2 blue screen crashes, each during a McAfee scan. The last time I managed to get a photograph of the screen which I have attached in the hope that it may help you to help me.
    Really do appreciate your help..
