Multiple MS files, do I need them all?

    Hey Geeks, running XP Home SP3
    I've been working with Nero to solve an error message that prevents the Nero Vision component from working (all other components still work), generating the attached error message says that the application has requested Runtime to terminate in an unusual way ... I notice that I have 5 different versions of MS Visual C++ and wonder 1) do I need them all and 2) could one of them be conflicting with Nero. At lest two were installed along with other video type apps. I have installed:
    Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 ATL Update kb973923 - x86 8.0.50727.4053
    Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable
    Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 ATL Update kb973924 - x86 9.0.30729.4148
    Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable - x86 9.0.21022
    Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable - x86 9.0.30729.17

    Is this like .Net where all versions must remain installed, or is this possibly like the until recently Java updates that did not remove the older version? If I delete the last two one at a time since I thnk there were recently installed with other software, what will happen to the basic Microsoft requirement for these apps.

    The followup from Nero says that the problem is the "msvcr80.dll" file is crashing when you want to open Nero Vision. they recommend to disable or uninstall "this" software. According to my investigation this file is part of MSVRC 2005 and is not a critical file. So, 1) can I just drag this file out of the Windows folder, or 2) given that there are two MSVisual C++ 2005 apps on the system, would it be better to uninstall the 2005 apps and leave only the 2008 VisualC++ apps.

    Would you see a problem with option 2?

    Also, what if I uninstall all 5 MS Visual C++, restart, then run windows update? What would I get?

    Try it?

    The Windows Installer some time ago was updated to allow you to uninstall updates, not just uninstall the whole package, including updates.

    I reckon this is part of what you are seeing. The add/remove applet may simply be showing you your options. On that same note, if you remove the base app, will you be left with the updated one?

    I don't know.

    At least two of the versions, those labeled with the term "redistributable" were installed along with a third party app. The last one with Moyea FLV editor that came with its own player. This I have uninstalled anyway. It seems to me that the redistributale versions might be most likely to have caused the problem with Nero. If I uninstall the redistributable versions then the worst that could happen is a software app associated with video may not work, which I would discover next time I tried to use it. Am I right? This doesn't seem like too big a risk to take if all that needs to be done is reinstall an app if it doesn't work. Would you see any larger impact on the system or OS?

    Hi

    Yes on if you remove any of those the worst is that you will have to install them again, however looking at what you posted I woudl remove the below ones and they are old versions of what you have already and any app should theortically use the latest version of MS VC

    Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 ATL Update kb973923 - x86 8.0.50727.4053
    Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable - x86 9.0.21022

    I would though leave the 2005 version and its update as some apps may only like that version and not the latest visual C++

    Thanks Halo,

    Your logic made since to me, and was also apparantly correct. I deleted the two referenced versions and that has solved the problem. Nero Vision now opens, there is no error message.

    Thanks again :>)
