A few weeks ago I let my Norton 360 subscription run out and did not get to installing the new version right away. A few days later, I was hit with some adware/malware (maybe antimalware doctor or something like that). I usually run the free version of Super AntiSpyware from time to time, so I ran that and it found a bunch of things from trojans to adbots. I kept running Super AntiSpyware and things would continue to get caught. I also installed Norton 360 and it found a few things and would pop up a message from time to time saying it blocked an attack. So after over a week of running Super AntiSpyware and Norton over and over, today I followed the directions at http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407 for Windows XP. I am not sure if it worked or not, because I definitely had some new (at least I had not seen it before) adware popup after running half of the fix tools. In this post I have attached the logs for Super AntiSpyware, Malwarebytes Anti-malware, ComboFix and RootRepeal. I will post my MGTools log in a follow-up post. Can you take a look to see if all looks ok?

Update - When I turned on my computer, Norton informed me that it found the following Backdoor.Tidserv!inf and that it requires manual intervention. Any ideas on how to remove? Not sure if you see this in my attached files or not:

Is CleverGet something you knowingly installed? If so, are you sure you trust it? If not then uninstall it.

You are way out of date with your version of SUPERAntiSpyware.
    • Please uninstall your current version (this is necessary).
    • Then download this SUPERAntiSpyware
    • Install this new version. It may tell you that you need to reboot to complete the installation. You must reboot at this time.
    • After the reboot, run SUPERAntiSpyware and immediately click the Check for Updates button to get more updates for the database.
    • Now run a new full scan of your system. And attach this new log.

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it has expired or need to be updated to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

There was no uninstall command for SuperAntiSpyware and I could not delete it through the Remove Programs window. I ended up overwriting the old SUPERAntiSpyware.exe with the new one and running it. It seems to be running the newer version now. I tried to remove CleverGet and in the Name Uninstall window it said it was uninstalling from C:\Documents and Settings\Parents\Local Settings\Application Data\CleverGet\ when I clicked Uninstall it said "Error loading C:\Documents and Settings\Parents\Local Settings\Application Data\CleverGet\mcidntld.dll The specofied modul could not be found" The following files do exist in C:\Documents and Settings\Parents\Local Settings\Application Data\CleverGet\. Should I just delete these manually?

    Directory of C:\Documents and Settings\Parents\Local Settings\Application Data\
    CleverGet

    06/08/2010 07:28 PM 88,064 clevergie.dll
    06/19/2010 04:43 PM 20,684 settings.xml
    06/08/2010 07:28 PM 58,711 Uninstall.exe

I have attached the SuperAntiSpyware, ComboFix and MGTools logs. FYI - In the middle of the SAS scan (but maybe unrelated as I think I touched the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware quarantine folder when browsing through Explorer at that time), I again received an alert from Norton that it found the Backdoor.Tidserv!inf and that it requires manual intervention.

So are you therefore saying that this is not something you installed?

Besides deleting the files and folders for it, you would also need to do the below:

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O2 - BHO: clevHelper Class - {9BAA1210-9CC4-43e6-86D5-187A323A07FB} - C:\Documents and Settings\Parents\Local Settings\Application Data\CleverGet\clevergie.dll

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

CleverGet was not something I knowingly installed. I deleted the files and ran C:\MGtools\analyse.exe and checked O2 - BHO: clevHelper Class - {9BAA1210-9CC4-43e6-86D5-187A323A07FB} - C:\Documents and Settings\Parents\Local Settings\Application Data\CleverGet\clevergie.dll for deletion anf clicked Fix. Let me know what you need me to do next. Thanks.

Okay that is what I expected but needed to be sure.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

I do not think I am ready for final steps yet. Today I was running a SuperAntiSpyware scan. I was also running an exercise video that I have had on my harddrive for over 2 months. In the middle of the scan and video, my computer just restarted. When I rescanned my computer, it found something. I have attached the SAS log. Also, any comment on the Backdoor.Tidserv!inf that Norton found a couple times. Here is a link to their remediation advice. Should I go ahead and do this? http://securityresponse.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2008-111113-1112-99&tabid=3

You never emptied your recycle bin after deleting those files and that was all that was found and removed.

When you complete my final instructions, you will be toggling system restore to a disable state and then back to enabled ( see step 9) which will remove old restore points. That is where this detection is being found.
