Mup.sys

I am trying to help a co-worker through his boot trouble. He has an E-Machines comp, and it has suddenly stopped booting. It stops at the MUP.SYS file, and goes no further. I have found many diffrerent ways to "fix" it, but none have worked. Is there a definite cause of this error, and a corresponding repair? Bobstar

 

What OS are you using? What exactly does the error message say? What methods have you used to attempt to fix the error?

 

it would also help if you told us the (failed) methods you used to "fix" this so we don't repost them as answers.

 

I'm assuming that you are trying to load into Safe Mode, which, other than the /sos switch for the boot.ini, is the only way you would see it hanging at mup.sys on the screen.

However, its likely not be to be mup.sys that can't load, but the driver after mup.sys.

Try going to advanced startup options menu and choose enable boot logging.

Then go to the Recovery console and use the 'type' program to read it and see the last thing to load.

At the C:\windows, or C:\winnt prompt, type:

type ntbtlog.txt

 

I've had the same problem. If you just started having problems and you haven't added any hardware, try Norton's free check http://security.symantec.com. See if it finds BLOODHOUND.W32.1. I installed an old hard drive with XP and then scanned the original drive. Several other antivirus programs wouldn't find the virus. I hope this helps.

 

I haven't heard from the gentleman who owns that computer for quite a while, about the same time I stopped getting virus notices from my isp. Apparently he had so many viri on his machine he had to reinstall windows. Good for him and everyone he knows!
