have 2nd pc with win98se as OS.

all of my Grandkids games are on there.

I upgraded to directx 9X (4.09.00.0904), when i upgraded my principal pc.

my mistake since all of the games, principally Reader Rabbit series, only operate on directx 8 and earlier.

can i somehow unistall or delete manually the directx.

have win98se install disc, tried to reinstall, but you cannot rewrite 9 to 8.

do not wish to upgrade the OS on this 2nd PC, since it is easy for kids to use.

    ANY help would be appreciated.

    thanks in advance

Can you do a system restore to a point before the upgrade.

I also still have workable 98, gets more difficult with time to run any programs on it though.

There is no system restore in 98. System restore was available in ME, skipped windows 2000 and then re-appeared in XP and newer.

I haven't run 98 is such a long time. Does directx appear in add/remove programs?

I'm searching on how to remove it but most directions are for XP.
Even the Major Geeks uninstaller needs an XP CD

From what I can find on Microsoft's website, it would appear that you would have to reinstall the previous sound and video drivers:

Did some more looking as I remembered that you could restore the registry in WinMe from the command line, and it works the same in Win 98.

scanreg /restore is it, but read the Microsoft kb article to see how to start your computer to be able to do it.

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/221512

You could then choose a date that is before the directx install, restore it, and then you might be able to re-run the needed directx version (try and download the needed version to re-install it).

Do you have a link to dx eradicator to help any one else who might be faced with this problem?
