My brand new router disconnects just like the old one

I just got a brand new router because I came home to find the old one invisible on the ethernet port as well as the wireless card on my PC. I figured the 2 year old router had just had it. I got a new one last night, and within 12 hours, it's doing the same thing as the old one. I am thinking that it has something to do with my 4 year old cable modem, but it doesn't make sense that the router would stop routing all together if the cable modem won't spit out an IP address. Maybe I just got a router that's bad out of the box, anyone help me on this?

Try to connect the PC directly to the Modem, if it does not work call your ISP.
