Hi There. My IE 6 browser stops searching properly from the address bar and then redirects me at random to sites that have nothing to do with my search.

I have gone through all the steps from the "Sticky" and have run the scans and have attached the reports.

Here are a couple of notes I made from the bitdefender scan:

The Trojan.swfDL.a and Trojan.killapp.30208.A were identified as problems and deleted but the scan froze part way through so I re-ran it. The second time through the Trojan.Killapp.30208.A did not show up, but Trojan.Downloader.Presario.A did. As this was running and identified, F-Secure pops up asking if I want to delete it and I said yes, so I don't know if that is still and issue.

Here are the scans, hope you can help.

Not sure if this is needed, but I just remembered that two weeks ago I had a problem where my computer rebooted itself and tried to log in as a guest user. I shut off the guest user account before so I also went and created a password to protect it and removed it from under admin and added a password to my user account.

Uninstall the below old versions of software:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 3
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
Java 2 Runtime Environment Standard Edition v1.3.1
Viewpoint Manager (Remove Only) <-- should have been uninstalled in step 0 of the READ ME
Viewpoint Media Player <-- should have been uninstalled in step 0 of the READ ME

Now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

Now download HOSTER and then follow the below steps.
    • Unzip Hoster to a convenient folder such as C:\Hoster
    • Run Hoster.exe, click Restore Original Hosts and then click OK.
    • Click the X to exit the program
Now make sure viewing of hidden files is enabled (per the tutorial).

Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DDCM] "C:\Program Files\WildTangent\DDC\DDCManager\DDCMan.exe" -Background
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DDCActiveMenu] "C:\Program Files\WildTangent\DDC\ActiveMenu\DDCActiveMenu.exe" -boot

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.
Boot into safe mode and use Windows Explorer to delete:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Limited User\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\8H2F8TUR\ad-sp2-fastclick[1].swf
    C:\Program Files\WildTangent <--- the whole folder

    Now run Ccleaner.

Now we need to Reset Web Settings:
    1. If you have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, goto step 2. If not, skip to step 3.
    2. Now right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK. Then skip step 3.
    3. If you do not have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, click Start, Control Panel (for some systems it may be Start, Settings, Control Panel), Internet Options, Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK.
Note for IE 7 users: You need to select Internet Options then the Advanced tab and then Reset Internet Explorer Settings!

    Now reboot in normal mode

Also delete all files in the below folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp
    C:\Documents and Settings\Steven\Local Settings\Temp

Now attach a the below new logs and tell me how the above steps went.

    1. GetRunKey
    2. ShowNew
    3. HJT

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Reminder Note: Once we have determined you are malware free you will need to disable System Restore, reboot, and re-enable system restore per step 1 of the READ & RUN ME. This only applies to if using WinXP or WinMe.

Hi There, followed the steps you gave me and all went fine with the following exceptions:

Uninstall the below old versions of software:
Java 2 Runtime Environment Standard Edition v1.3.1
This was completed but a message stating that I was unable to delete folder and subfolders "c:\Program Files\JavaSoft\JRE\1.3.1\lib\ext

Boot into safe mode and use Windows Explorer to delete:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Limited User\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\8H2F8TUR\ad-sp2-fastclick[1].swf

The ad-sp2-fastclick[1].swf was found and deleted under "\67mxofod" not "\8H2F8TUR"
C:\Program Files\WildTangent <--- the whole folderCould not locate any folder names Wildtangent so nothing was deleted

Also delete all files in the below folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp
    C:\Documents and Settings\Steven\Local Settings\Temp

There was nothing other than today's files here so nothing was deleted
Logs attached - Please take a look. Thanks!

Just try deleting the c:\Program Files\JavaSoft\JRE\1.3.1 folder yourself.

Your logs are clean but you did not tell me how things are working.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    3. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • go back to step 8 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    4. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Things seem to be working okay.....I had one weird instance where I my son was browsing for guitar tabs using IE6 and the microsoft office 2000 installer poped up and asked for the disk. Not sure what prompted it, but we cancelled out of it. That's the only issue I've noticed. Since then, I installed firefox and have been using that as browser.

    No other issues noted.

I have deleted the javasoft folder (I noticed there was a quicktime zip folder in there so maybe that's why it wouldn't delete automatically?)

    final System restore done.
