Just got back from the bank, they informed me that my Visa was one of the cards affected. :(
So....I can't use it anymore, and although they are issuing a new card next month they also told me not to make any deposits for awhile since that card was linked to my bank acount.
    what a bummer.
anyone else here affected by this?

At least they caught it. It's good to know they have information on the accounts compromised and are acting on it.

I tihnk I might have been, my bank wast concerned when I called but i got a call back later that I missed. I had a stringof charges on it that i didn't make and now my account is -$65+ with things left pending and bank fees per charge. :( I had them block my card and send me a new one, but i can't use my account and have negative money :(

luckily there has been no acount activity on mine, they did say to keep a really close eye on the statements for the next six months or so.

sorry to hear you may have been hit too.
the irony is..I read all about it beforehand and it never even crossed my mind that my card could have been affected.
they told me as soon as I walked into the bank, apparently they'd been trying to call me...but I loathe phones and never answered it.

There was just a story on this on NBC news tonight. They're reporting that banks aren't really telling their customers anything about it, and if they mention anything at all, it's to tell them not to worry. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/8393016/

I'm glad to hear some banks are different.

I was about a year or two ago, but not this time. My card was shut off after I pumped about 2 dollars in gas and it stopped pumping :)

That is why I have online banking for my debit card, and i've also got online access to all of mine and my wifes credit cards, and I watch ALL the balances atleast every two or three days!! Atleast if someone does get ahold of them...hopefully they won't get too far ahead of me!!!!

Not only that...I also took advantage of annualcreditreport.com to get my free credit reports (everyone is now entitled to one free credit report from each of the 3 credit bureaus, annually, incase you didn't know) and that way you can make sure someone hasn't stolen you!! Atleast in the US...I don't know about the UK or anywhere else!!

Yes you are correct....that is why I will not accept a credit card offer that doesn't have a gaurantee against unauthorized spending on your account...and whenever I do make a purchase with my debit card...I always use the credit side instead of debit...that way I have the backing of Mastercard's policies!!

In the US, federal law limits you to $50 responsibility of purchases on a stolen credit card. When I was much younger, I used to pay Citibank something like four bucks a month for their "credict card protection guarantee"...which limited responsibility to $50 in the case of a stolen credit card. Neat scam.

As far as using your debit card like a credit card...read your TOS VERY carefully. Mastercard may or may not actually protect you under its credit card rules. Usually not.

I wondered if we had, as our card got shut off as a debit card over the weekend, but it wasn't that. Apparently if you EVER enter over ANY time frame (it could be years) your PIN number incorrectly 4 times (doesn't have to be 4 times in a row) then this particular bank shut your debit facility off for 24 business hours! I can understand it if it was 4 in a row, but 4 over ANY time period?? That's the biggest load of crap I ever heard!!! And not even the bank can unlock when you complain!

this is yet another reason I love my bank, I have THE best bank...(and it's NOT just because they always have fresh coffee, although that's great too)
they know us by name, voice and sight, are always available to help and always call if there is unusual activity in one of the accounts.

Be glad you know about it. If these people were actually any good, nobody would ever know that the cards were stolen!

The thing about this incident that strikes me is that I read somewhere that during an interview with one of the people leading the investigation as to why this occurred they were not able to give out specific details. But when asked the question as to whether or not it was a case of no firewalls, out of date / nonexistant antivirus solutions, the person answered that "yes, the problem had something to do with those items". Incredible.

All it takes is for one machine (ONE machine) to have a failed update, or to be security breached to get into a network. One client. Could be an emailed exploit. Could be a USB-drive or a WiFi transmitter, could be a number of things of varying complexity. From there (a trusted location) you can get where you like. I also make a fair bet that there was plenty of Social Engineering going on too.

Really you need to talk to someone like Kevin Mittnick about it. I bet he's got some good ideas of how it happened too ;)
