My CD Player is acting like a dripping sink, uh sorta

A dripping sink? Yeah well what I mean is that every 5 or 6 seconds it opens, then it closes, then count to 5 or 7 or whatever and it opens then it closes. It wasn't doing this last night when I put it to bed, so to speak, but having called my wife about it & she said, "Yes, it was doing that to me this morning...and I couldn't get online either." Well, that last problem has obviously (I mean, here *I* am right?)

But still it continues, right here & now. So I figure I better get off of here and leave this question in the laps of you good folks...i.e., the thing is going to burn out if it keeps going right? Apologies if this is a "Hardware" vs. "Software," problem -- but heck, I don't know. I looked into it with "system information" and as far as that little attempt went, well, sysinfo "thinks" (does anyone think these things think? Just wonderin'. Joeseph Campbell said he couldn't help but believe there was some little intelligent entity in his 'puter that took some perverse glee in acting up in these gremlin like fashions. 'Course he said it with a great deal more eloquence.)

Anyway, like I said, I'd better get off here, shut 'er down and wait for one or more (?) of you fine souls to toss me a bone of assistance here. So, that is just what I shall do.

Faretheewell All and Pleeeeze help out if you've an idea.

(OH, P.S.--> Some info you might want (& if their be any other let me know & I'll provide it if I can.) The CD in question is a ("K[?]")Hypermedia unit. "52 x 24 x 52 'SeamlessLink.'" Running on Windows XP Pro. I use Norton 360 as antivirus/malware protector (yeah, I know, but being a 'low tech' person, well, had to get something, y'know. As to that any suggestions would also be welcome. :^) And...Uh, anything else needed? Please let me know.

    OK, G'day 2 all,
    Sincerely, Staghart

I'd suspect either a prank program or a virus.

So, the CD tray -the actual tray where you'd set a disc- is opening and closing by itself? Check for malware/prankware as suggested. Restarting the PC (maybe in Safe Mode) could tell a lot about the issue. If the drive continues to open and close when Windows isn't even running (like if you're in the BIOS for example) then we'd know that it's hardware related and either the button on the CD drive is stuck or malfunctioning, or maybe something is stuck in the drive itself, or it has simply gone haywire. Luckily, new DVD burners are ultra-affordable now; under $25 on newegg ( link ). Just be sure to get the right interface for your system: either IDE/PATA or SATA/serial.

'Lo & thank U very much for your reply. & *yes* the disk itself itself is actually opening & closing -- spooky aren't it (sic). Even more so is that it did that when logged onto early...way early this morning, but right now it seems quite pleased with having planted this problem in my mind & sits like a hen on an egg as I wait for it to pop open...but my waiting is for naught. "A watched naught never roils," or something like that. As to your suggestions for seeking out the cause I will get on it as soon as my day gets off of me, so to speak. Bizzy I mean.

One further thing. In looking at your answer I took note of the large number of "Help me I be drownding! (sic)" [I'm going to stop writing "sic" & presume that U know I'm not illiterate -- at least as far as the King's English goes, tho perhaps not with the Queen's computer. Anyway, I noticed how many folks you'd helped and yet you'd but one friend out here in "space." So, Ms. dlb on the presumption that everyone could use at least one more friend, I offer my hand...no, no, no...not in marriage...just in friendship.

So, once again, thank you, and wishing you an XLNT day,
    Faretheewell,
    Staghart

Haha, you type like a girl!

    ...Just kidding!

Is there something between you two that we should not know? Lol.

For the cd drive problem, check connectors. I've seen loose connections cause this opening/closing problem.

    Virus/malware could also cause this.
