My clock is gaining time

My system clock keeps gaining time. I have tried to sync with NIST but it gives an error message. I am connected to the Internet through a DSL connection.

Right now, the time is 1:04 but the time on the task bar says 1:16.

I have always used NIST because Windows time was not always reliable. Is this the result of an on-board battery failure in progress?

    Thanks,

    What's the error?
    http://tf.nist.gov/tf-cgi/servers.cgi
let's hope you aren't using the NY server which currently reports a failure. The Chicago server is not available.

I'm in Denver so I don't know if that matters.

When I go to the time setting feature it says:

When I choose the "Update Now" function I get the message:

So it fails and the next sync time and date changes but no sync occurs.

I am right here within 12 miles of Boulder. How do I set the time update feature to use the ntp-a.boulder.nist.gov link?

    Version of Windows?

Did you notice that all three servers at Boulder have problems? That might be your problem.
    time-a.timefreq.bldrdoc.gov
    time-b.timefreq.bldrdoc.gov
    time-c.timefreq.bldrdoc.gov

    You want utcnist.colorado.edu @ 128.138.140.44
    or utcnist2.colorado.edu @ 128.138.141.172

    For XP
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314054
Scroll down until you get to the section ;b]Configuring the Windows Time service to use an external time source[/b]

    Still is

Tried the "Fix Me" but that failed. Stated that it did not apply to my operating system or application version.

Moved on to the "Do it yourself" method and that went swimmingly. Only problem is that it is still 12 minutes fast. There was nowhere for me to enter either of the addresses you cited. Should I have typed them in where the instructions said to type "peers?" I'm a bit confused.

There was also a typo in the instructions for the execution command.

You still have mentioned what version of Windows you are currently running.

I just looked at my XP SP3 time. I right clicked the clock and selected Adjust Date/Time. I then clicked on the Internet Time. I have mine set to
    Code:
    time.windows.com
I'm not sure what happens if I'd switch to time.nist.gov and I'm hesitant to change it.

I just downloaded one of Karen Kenworthy's Power Tools. Since she died, her programs have not been updated.
    I downloaded this http://www.karenware.com/powertools/ptsync.asp
installed it. Then I clicked on the Auto Sync tab and expanded Colorado. In the list is one of the working time servers utcnist.colorado.edu
You might try this or time.nist.gov which also will work. You can set the Server to time.nist.gov without downloading Karen's Power Tool, Time Sybc. Just work through the clock in your tray to do it.

I have always used time.nist.gov as my time standard. I found the windows time standard to be less than reliable.

How do I install the utcnist.colorado.edu time standard as the default? In the procedure at Windows (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314054) they have a command (step 5c) that they say to type "peers" but should I use utcnist.colorado.edu instead? I really didn't understand that part of the procedure.

I really have no idea; that's why I tried Karen's Time Sync.

No; follow the directions as written and type peers.

For some reason the time is now correct. Perhaps the fix at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314054 worked, but not immediately; yet I still have the error message displayed at the date and time properties window that the synchronization failed.

Let's call this one PROBLEM SOLVED and move on. If it occurs again I can always come back and we can try something else.

Thanks for all of your help.
