Lately my computer has been freezing. I was wondering if anyone in here could help me figure out what the problem might be.

    I am running windows XP
    512MB ram

That's a little vague and ambiguous, don't ya think?
First, do some general maintenance. Visit this link and do what's suggested:
    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=106650
Track down your various drivers and install the newest versions available. You can get this info from the Device Manager, or by running PC Wizard:
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/PC_Wizard_d3846.html
Then do some malware scanning if some maintenance doesn't help. Visit this link and follow the steps:

After you do this, if your PC is still acting up, let us know and we'll go from there....

ok thank-you I did run ccleaner and disk cleanup defrag etc. So i am going to try the pc wizard thing.

Sorry if this was vague to you....It doesn't do it at any specific time just all of a sudden my mouse pointer and keyboard cease to function. I can always tell what time it freezes if it does it while I am away because everything freezes...........including my clock on whatever time it froze at.

Hmmmm.... you may want to run a complete memory diagnostic. Here's a link to one of my personal favorites: http://www.majorgeeks.com/Microsoft_Windows_Memory_Diagnostic_d3955.html You can create a bootable CD or floppy. Be sure to run the extended tests for at least 3 or 4 passes. It will take time, so go have a pizza and a pitcher or two of beer. Then go to your hard drive maker's web site, download their diagnostic tool, and run it as specified. All the drive manufacturer's have them (except Toshiba), and they're free, and easy to run. They're usually bootable floppies or CD's... So, run those tests and see if that tells you anything.

Oh yeah, check your Event Viewer for any errors.... right click My Computer > Manage > Event Viewer. Check each sub-section for errors, keep track, and post any that you may find and we'll try to help ;)

    Hi,
I use a 8000 Microsoft Laser Wireless mouse [Bluetooth]
Yes I have experienced computer/mouse freezing and found it related to my graphics card?

You made no mention re the computer's specs?

If you do have a Graphics Card installed?

    xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
When I do have have this problem I uninstall the Graphics Card programming

You could try and uninstall the Graphics Card program and do a cleanup [I use the "Free Driver Cleaner Pro"] Be sure before doing same you locate/downloaded the suitable Graphics Card Driver programming on to your desktop.

I find the Nvidia uninstall [using "Add / Remove"] still leaves its program folder complete with files in "Programs" Drive/C with which I delete!
Then I install the Graphics Card program in "Safe Mode"
Afterwards my computer/mouse behaves all OK!

the only thing that I have noticed in the event viewer is a repeated error, "Service control Manager"

Under the 2 repeating errors one says " The WindrvNT service failed to start due to the following error: The system cannot find the file specified"

the other says: "The mrtRate service failed to start due to the following error: the system cannot find the file specified

From what I can tell, the WinrdvNT file is not a Microsoft or Windows file. Try renaming it. Change it from "WindrvNT.sys" to maybe "WindrvNT-old.sys" or maybe "WindvNT-sys.old". Then reboot and run the PC for awhile. If the problem doesn't happen again, then you can probably safely delete the file after a few days. I believe the file is in C:\windows\system32\... You could actually apply this same "fix" to the above file also (mrtrate); rename it and see what happens.

I'm still researching both files, so be patient ;) I'll do my best! But keep in mind, these are suggestions. Don't get mad if something bad happens!

WindrvNT may be virus related, so a malware scan is probably a good idea...
