Hello, I am new here.....I found this place while in search of how I can speed up my computer. When i boot it up, it says things about the registry hive is in 1 fragment....etc. then it continues and i login. Then when loading my user profile, that's where it gets really slow and never really recovers after that. Opening programs, web pages, videos anything is slow.....except for downloading.....that seems to be a pretty quick, smooth and relatively painless experience.
    Any thoughts??
I defragment often, run the disk cleaner, CCleaner, Avast home edition virus scanner, and I purchased Trend Micro Internet Security 2008. I run all those often and don't really come up with much and it doesn't seem to speed up but a little and then bogs back down quickly. Recently it's started freezing up on me and I've come close to throwing the computer through my window.
    Here's a little about what I'm running

    Windows XP SP2
    Intel Pentium 4 CPU 1.60GHz
    2.0 GB RAM
    NVIDIA GeForce2 MX/MX 400

    I have 2 hard drives......ones small, C: drive 68.3GB and F: drive 298GB

I downloaded HiJackThis and will attach a log in case that'll help speed up the process. (tired of slow moving things....i.e. my computer...lol)
Any help would be very much appreciated. Thank you for your time and help!

Before even looking at your HJT log I can see the fact that you mention you are running two Anti-Virus is never a wise idea, there will be much inner conflict as the two programs fight for control over system files.

If you do have both installed and running you need to uninstall Avast Home Edition if you have just paid for Trend's IS

Further more besides a HJT log what could also be useful to the others who willw help you out is if you were to take some screenshots of programs that you currently have running at start up.

    1) You mention you already have Ccleaner installed, so go to Tools > start-Up and take some screenshot(s) of what you see there.

    2) Also open up your task manager.. make sure you "show processes for all users" to give the full picture of what's going on, maximise the window and screenshot this also for us.

    Best of luck

Do you know much about Avast or Trend Micro IS 2008? Avast seems to me to be a more thorough scanner........but I did pay 70.00 for Trend Micro. I had just Trend Micro for a while and my computer seemed to slow down alot so I installed Avast. Even though I paid for Trend Micro, do you know which is a better scanner?

I cannot comment on what I think is a better scanner as I have never personally ever used a paid for anti virus, certainly never Trend's Suite.. I have always used freeware antivirus such as AVG and am currently using Avast Home Edition myself. I tend to favour a stand alone AV over a paid for SUITE which tend to always bog down machines due to all the extra special little featufes they include into the mix, which have never appealed to me.

If you do go for Avast...and the choice would be yours....it would just be a pity that you'd already forked out and spent cash on the paid for suite :( In any case you need to make a decision and successfully disable/shut down one of the two programs now....reboot your machine and take it from there.

    You're very welcome

As you can see from your log

Both Trend Micro and Avast have 4 services each running ... this will be the cause of most of the slowness...

Here is a screen shot of the start up items from Ccleaner and a screenshot of the processes for all user from the task manager.

Anything else I can get you to help in speeding up my computer???

Ok, so the startup screenshot is 101 kb and this site only allows for up to 97.7 to be uploaded in a single file.......

use a photo hosting site like I do such as flickr.com and upload your image to there...what browser do you use there? If using Firefox:

    • Once you have uploladed your image, click to make it the largest size
    • right click the image > copy image location
    • come back to the forum where you are posting, hit the "insert image" button on the top toolbar > right click and paste in the URL > preview post to ensure it's been done correctly

your two above attachments are blank (at least they are to me) perhaps if you were to simply use paint instead of pasting into a word doc/

Take your screenshot > go into paint > edit and paste > save as .PNG for best quality image for us to see

It would be a very good idea for you to now install some kind of start up manager if you haven't already got one installed. The one I use and can recommend is Start-UpCPL

This is wise to use as opposed to using or abusing MSCONFIG to control your start ups....even wiser than using Ccleaner
Then others can help assist you on what to lose using start-upCPL to free up resources

Sorry but this is not true. CCleaner still uses the MSconfig registry keys and it just does not mark the
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\state] registry key to show you that you are in selective startup mode like MSconfig does. The problem is that now this keys look like they are orphans.

For example, if you use CCleaner to disable 2 startups for McAfee and one for ZoneAlarm, here is what the registry keys for MSconfig will look like.

What Halo said was the CCleaner does not enable selective startup mode which is true. However it does use the MSconfig registry keys and it does make them look like orphans that need to be cleaned up. Thus I don't recommend using CCleaner to control startups as stated in Dealing with Startup Processes

sorry, i've been away dealing with home ownership issues. I'm back to work on speeding up my computer.......here is a new log from hijackthis.......
Also, the screenshots and log i posted were before i uninstalled TM IS 2008. So they would undoubtedly show both virus scanners. But this log is current and should reflect that Trend Micro is no longer on my computer.
Uninstalling TM did speed things up some, but if there is anything else i can do to speed it up more, please let me know.
Thank you to all who have helped.

    Josh
