I just found this new cooler at NewEgg . . . it sounds good (and I checked to make sure it was for a socket 939)!

Have seen this one , before, but don't know that I would use it - - your dual core might not run as cool as your present cpu, and with video editing, I would have preferred something from Thermaltake, or Artic .

Firstly, I'm sorry that I missed the video cards. Since I'm looking at cpu's right now, I couldn't figure out what link I needed to go to to look at the cpu's, even though you plainly said the links were for graphic cards. Taking a better look at it today, I saw what you were showing me, baklogic, and thanks. A new video card is going to be my next purchase in a few months. Maybe even Santa will bring it . ;)

I'm going to stay with the ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 64 Pro 92mm CPU Cooler

Thanks also for your advice about the heatsink and fan. I was a little leary about the ZeroTherm myself, since it's a new design (for me) . . . not sure if it's proven itself, and it's more expensive, so I brought it here. I liked the fact that it has a copper bottom though, because it'll conduct the heat better.

Besides the additional $15.00 in price, why would the

be better for me than the

    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...14601&pf_rd_i=B000FU1ZMC#moreAboutThisProduct

or wouldn't it be? For $15.00, I'd rather get a stronger/faster one if it won't cause any damage to my other components (like the SATA card did because I didn't use the standoffs). Is it too powerful/high voltage/large, etc, for my mobo? If it will be ok for my pc, not cause damage, I'll buy this one.

    I don't think this one: AMD ADO4400DDBOX Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core 4400+ 2.3GHz Processor

will do you much good. It is an AM2 socket chip, you want socked 939. Dang, duals for $70? That first one in your post looks pretty nice DeniseM, I might look into that for folding.

    Got this one ordered: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103053.

    Thanks Fred . . . . I forgot again about socket 939.

So the decision has been made.

Well, it's a done deal. I just ordered them from NewEgg. I did a little searching to see if I could find them cheaper, but NewEgg was the cheapest. They should arrive in about 5 to 7 days . . . be prepared! ;)

I keep going over and over with this in my mind, reading the description of the ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 64 Pro 92mm CPU Cooler. Is the "cooler" only the fan or the heat sink and fan? If it's just the fan, do I need to buy a new heat sink or can I use the one I have? I didn't order a heat sink, just the "cooler." I'm going bonkers here . . . :foolish (no reflection on you, ibbonkers, lol)

the arctic freezer pro is a heatsink with a 92mm fan attached it works well too so no worries (and yes I'm bonkers :p )

As ibbonkers said, and as the picture in the link showed, :duck The Artic Pro is complete - its not always clear, though, so always ask questions - then , sometimes just get confused at the answers.:D
Thanks to Fred, and ibbonkers, you are nearly at the next crossroad, :dancer .....then graphics card, :cloud9 then overclockers department :hammer .....................

I forgot what a heat sink looks like when it's not connected to the fan . . . I barely knew what each part was when I started to put the pc together. If you remember, I put off putting it together for 8 months because I didn't know a heat sink from a cpu from a psu, and I'll never forget poor Walter trying to show me the 4 point port for the cpu. I did know what RAM looked like though, :LOL !

Thanks for letting me know about the heat sink. After I install the cpu and hsf, I'm finished for a while. I bought a SATA HUB and some SATA I to SATA II cables for some of my eSATA hdds. I'll be hooking them up after I install the cpu, but connecting HUBs and ext hdds is something I've done very often, so np there.

The graphics card will be waiting until at least sometime in 2008, and from what I read about overclocking, :ban I'm not looking to go there, so you can enjoy the rest of this year, knowing that I won't be knocking on your door, asking questions about these things. :dood

I'll let you know how it went, or didn't go, connecting the cpu and hsf.

    Hi everyone . . .

I thought I'd keep you up to date on the new cpu and hsf. In a nutshell, nothing's happened.

My daughter is an LPN and is taking courses to become an RN. She and my son-in-law came home from Iraq around the 1st of Oct. A course that she needed to take is in New Jersey (6 hrs drive) and was scheduled for about a week after they came home, but her car had deteriorated in the 1.5 years that they were over there. Since I rarely use my car, she asked me if she could borrow it. The cpu and hsf came in and they've been sitting in a box on my sofa ever since because I need to bring it to the tech to remove the fan.

I feel like Sonic the Hedgehog with this computer . . . duck this, watch out for that, don't forget to do this first before you do that, remember not to do this but make sure you do that, etc, etc. LOL

I'll let you know when I have some news to tell you.

    Hi Guys,

The new dual core cpu, heat sink and fan are installed. When I brought my pc to the computer shop, he wouldn't remove the clips holding he fan down "because accidental damage might be incurred." But I guess no accidental damage could be incurred when unclasping the brakets, removing the heat and fan and installing the new parts, all for a nice charge of $30.00. If I couldv'e removed the clasps, I could have removed the old parts and installed the new parts in 5 to 10 minutes. I see grease coming out of the sides of the heat sink, which I'm not happy about. Anyway, they're installed. I haven't given it a good workout yet to see how it'll do, but the only original part left out of all the parts I got for this pc is the mobo. I'm very much hoping that things go smoothly and I don't have to get a new one.

    Again, I'll keep you updated.

Howdy DeniseM! Hopefully it will work great for you. Grease coming out from under the heatsink is not the sign of work, but if it becomes a problem, it should be on him. (Keep your receipt) And $30 is not much for a computer repair.

    Good Luck!

There are 2 techs at this shop. The one I spoke with kept telling me that there are 4 clips and black knobs to secure the fan. I kept telling him that there are only 2. It's easily visible but he wouldn't relent. Finally, I told him that I built the computer and there are only 2 knobs and clips and he finally believed me.

$30.00 isn't bad for a computer repair but all I wanted was for the other tech to remove the clips that were securing the fan (because the one I spoke with didn't seem to know a$$ from his elbow. The other tech told me, the last time that I brought my pc there and discovered that there were no risers, that he had disconnected the brackets with no problem. So I thought that "no problem" removing brackets meant less than a 1 minute job. I took the $30.00 fee was a way for them to secure business. I'd never bring my pc there unless it was absolutely necessary. As a matter of fact, I'm going to start looking for another pc repair shop. Having the grease spilling out from the edges of the heat sink told me that they don't take pride in their workmanship . . . just get the pc's in and back to the customer asap.

    But that's another story.

I've been giving Gideon a bit of a trial test tonight and it seems to be passing very well. I was moving very large files while opening internet explorer and changing the name of a file, while running a program that I couldn't do anything else with the pc while it was running without the dual core cpu. I'm very happy so far!

Well, I've given the pc a good workout for the past few days. I've been uploading, downloading and moving large files, checking my email, searching on the net for things for over 2 days and it hasn't even so much as hiccuped. It's very fast and can do multiple things at the same time. I'm really happy with the pc, and the ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 64 Pro 92mm CPU Cooler, and really all the parts looks great together. A lean, mean computing machine! :celebrate . . . ready to take on anything that I throw at it :boxing . . . and if it weren't for you guys, I would've had a heap of scrap metal, so thanks very much :grouphug

I don't want to put the side panel back on but it's inevitable . . . I just wanna look at it for a couple of days. When I find my disposable camera, I'll take a picture of it and post it here.

All I can say is thank you all very much!

Well, you guys aren't rid of me yet.

I want to format my computer. I've been looking for and driver/updated driver for the CPU but I can't find it. At best, I came up

    http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/TechnicalResources/0,,30_182_871_13118,00.html

but I'm not sure if this is the right one.

And to make things more confusing, I read, at different sites:

    ARGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Why do you want to format? What problems are you having? Oh yeah, the last link in your post was from a 2 year old thread, not sure if it is applicable.

I want to start from scratch since installing the new cpu . . . eliminate all the little bugs that bother me that I know shouldn't happen, and things that shouldn't happen but do happen, i.e., when hovering over a link, I should be able to click Ctrl + click left mouse pad button to bring me there, but it doesn't.

I think right now is a good time to do it.

I have heard of programs like this http://majorgeeks.com/Driver_Collector_d3982.html That copy all your drivers so when you format, They should all be there. I have not used it, but looks pretty handy (just put it on one of your backup drives, not the one you are wanting to format...)

Backup anything important to you, maybe clear the CMOS, then toss the OS CD/DVD in, and format and reinstall. :D

I have all the other drivers that I need, and they're the updated ones. I've already prepared my pc for the format. I need only the driver for the cpu.

Good thought to clear the CMOS (I know how to do it) :)

I'm going to open a new thread for this . . . maybe someone will know the exact cpu driver that I need.

    Thanks Fred :)
