Hi, First, I have to say, I'm a newbie to the computer, Ok, well actually almost a year. I was just starting to get comfortable with things, now something new developed :cry. For the Past few days, it sounds as though my computer is running. Driver maybe?? I dunno. I was running a security scan with Norton, and...it was still running about 350,000 plus files where normally its cleaned at about 150,000 something files. Sorry, I don't know the termonalogy. Its the best I can describe it. Someone please help.

It may be your cooling fan running , as this has started about the time the weather has gotten warmer. Go to Start>Control Panel>Power Options and set your your monitor and hard drive to turn off after a period of time you consider good. I have mine set at: monitor=15 mins, HHD=20 mins. (Use what feels right to you) Also set your system to go into stand by. Mine=30mins. See if that stops the continous running sounds.
If you mean your Anti-virus scannner, all i can say is Norton is not my favorite. Being you are kind of new to things you might want to start another thread on how to replace that with another AV application.(Norton is a little tricky to remove)
    And welcome to MajorGeeks :wave

Thanks for the greetings Musksnipe...I've heard of this site through a computer guy that tryed working with me when I lived in CO last fall. Now, I'm in Chicago, and will follow your suggestion on the monitor & hard drive, it is humid/hot here now. However, when I was running the security anti virus scan, I saw some prettin funky stuff scrolling across (like it should have been in a porn site-I NEVER VISIT SITES LIKE THAT). Norton is not one of my favorites either, I didn't know better then. My Spy Doctor catches more than the Norton. Now that I have a little experience under my belt, I will pay more attention. THANK YOU.

I'm sure there are threads devoted to this but I always use AVG and don't ever use Norton. If it comes with a machine I buy I take the time to uninstall it.

If you're actively running antivirus the added load on your processor could raise the temp enough to kick your fan into high gear so to speak. Listen to it after a reboot with nothing running but the default processes. If it's quiet i would surmise the fan was the noise.

If it's a clicking..it is prolly your harddrive. Some new machines do come with crap drives.

Hi Gabriel: I did as you and Musksnipe suggested....I think its possible 2 issues with the fan being 1 of them. I had AVG in Colorado that someone put on for me, along with CC Cleaner & Spybot...everything worked well until I "CRASHED" the computer and everything was erased. The guys at Circuit City suggested Norton, but even a Newbie like me recognized an inferior product (too late it was already in). I will be switching Anti-Virus. Just doing more research. Thanks for your suggestion i

I knew this site existed; but didn't know there was a forum where others could participate. I think the fan is one thing, but have noticed on my DSL modem that the activity light flicks every few seconds, even when I am not working on it. Hmmm...I hope it isn't anything serious. I think I will be getting rid of the Norton sometime soon. I appreciate your responses. Thank You :wave
