could anyone help him as he needs a lot of help. he had to submit this document to his boss last week wednesday and was unable to.

he tried openning the document after he last saved it and it did not open in english but the file is there. when i click on properties the type of file is file but normally a file would be html, doc, etc. how does he get it back to a .doc file.

help him please cause he boss is tripping and he needs the job

Sounds like just need to add the extension to the end of the filename.

You could try right-clicking on the file>Properties
next to the "Opens with" click Change (button)
Select program that would normally open .doc file (word, wordpad...)
    Click ok.

yeah i already did that but when it open in microsoft word as i cahnged it to .doc, it tells me that it needs a converter to display properly.

What program was it created in?

If it's a text file then you could try opening it in notepad, copying it to word and then saving the new file. Notepad opens just about anything, I even opened a DVD movie in notepad once.....just to see if it would, that was a lot of text, 4.5gbs of text? it took a while lol

it was created in microsoft word and i already tried opening it in notepad and wordpad but it displays just like how it displays in microsoft word.

apparently it was decoded or something but if it was hot do you code it back

    How does it display?

Oh and have you tried (this is sometimes a long shot but worth a try) renaming it to name.doc (name being the name of the file) but physically typing ".doc"

Also, what type of file does it say it is currently? what has it changed to?

Edit: Decoded? you mean coded? encrypted?

rename it using .docx and see if that helps. he probably used office 07 to create it with uses the same format as 03 except with an X at the end of the extension.

Encrypted huh, did your dad encrypt it or password protect it?

If you'd like you could email me the file and I could try and open it for you, I completely understand if you don't want to but I'm just about out of ideas to tell you. I'm better when I can actually see whats going on.

If you are ok with that and the Admin are ok with it (you may want to check)

Then maybe one of us can figure it out.

You did not answer the question as to who encrypted it. If it was not you, then we will not help you to do this. If it was your Dad, then he would need the password to open it. If he forgot the password, you are out of luck.

I'm not sure the file is actually encrypted.

It is of type "file" so it has no program associated with it.
When he right-clicks and selects "Open with Word" it opens but asks for a converter.

GT2008, I guess you don't have the Office disk that the program asks for in order to install the converter?

If OP sees no problem with uploading the file (has to be less than 100kb) I see no reason not to allow it for the purpose of someone trying to open it in Word to see if it is damaged or can be opened in a different program. (Like TimW said we won't try to break encryption on a file for someone.)
