    So proud!

She was tested on self-defense techniques against strikes (one-steps), self-defense techniques against grabs, judo throws (2 per belt), sparring, sword, bo staff, forms, and knowledge (brain) of Taekwondo. They did class photos in front of a green screen.

Barring no delays, she will have her black belt (recommended) by this time next year, and then her black belt (accepted) just before she turns 12. She just turned 10.

You did me a great favor.

I had been trying to get my daughter into Judo training, but she said that was too masculine -she's a girly-girl.

I showed her your daughter's pic, and now she wants to go.!!:-D

    Thanks!!:)

WOW!! Congrats to you and your daughter. What a stunning picture!

Many decades ago my then young daughter took lessons in Judo (overseas) and after a while she didn't want to pursue it. She was taught to count to 10 in Japanese :-D and did get her white belt. Wished she would have continued her lessons. Too bad our encouragements didn't work out. She was such a very girlie girl.

I think that Judo is a lot like greco-roman wrestling, which is a man's sport for the most part.

If you are competing, I agree. However, it is quite an effective form of self defense.

Jenna is still a girly girl. However, she is still excelling. It is taking me being rough on her though, with sparring, etc. Now she gets mad instead of crying when she gets jolted a bit.

In fact, she has excelled enough that she has hurt me pretty good a couple times (not that I tell her!).

Jenna is learning 1-10,20,30...100 in Korean. She also learns various phrases of respect, and so forth. She is trying to learn more, because her family in California is Korean. She is fascinated with her Korean heritage (as she should be).

Judo was at that time in the early seventies the only defense course available there. Of course, your Jenna is still a girly girl and a graceful girl that one can easily see in the pic. I believe that these courses can add a lot of confidence/self assurance to the young ones.

EDIT: just noticed that you posted the pics of Jenna. Awesome pics!!

Guess we don't need to call you "Pink/Red Fingers". rolleyes

OBTW and off topic, I'm sure guitarists use something on the their strumming/picking hand (if not using actual finger picks) to keep the nails from chipping or breaking.

OMG wow brilliant stuff, my friends 5yr old daughter has taken up Korean martial arts (Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan ) as well and doing well, she can kick my butt already!

Not a hard task anyways! :)

But great stuff for your daughter Jeremy, you must be superbly proud?

    Very much so.

I think she is going to enter the school talent show this year if they will let her bring her bo staff on school grounds. They are kinda paranoid about that stuff.

Proud parents is a great thing for self esteem and motivation, I know you both do this in abundance.

I hope they will in school as we need to really explore giving our kids a wide variety of experience and knowledge, if we do not expand out kids knowledge base how are we to move to new levels.

I think the martial arts gives kids and at a young age discipline, knowledge, commitment and these we need in real life or so I believe personally.

Adry - inform the school ahead of time. Either you or your daughter can bring the bo to the school office under their care. When it comes time for the talent show, one of the school staff can give it to her prior to her time so she can practice and perform. Once she's done, she can hand it back and you and she can pick it up afterwards. See if this will work.

She looks really great - cute, and girly, with really good martial arts form. Looks like she can kick my *** too... or soon will.

Yeah that is what I planned to do.

I think I will be able to get it done, especially since she would be using her competition staff, which is very light and a lot less a weapon.

I'm not from the US, so I don't know what the fuss is about, but we have a weapons in school problem here to and I know the staff can be a formidable weapon in the hands of a pro (but then again, so can anything, ranging from a sharp pencil to a belt or even a shirt) but at the end of the day, it's just a big stick!

In the US, one kid got in trouble for biting parts off a Pop Tart where it kinda looked like it was 'gun shaped'. Another kid got in trouble for bringing a plastic toy gun slightly bigger than a quarter to school...

An actual weapon in school might take an act of Congress depending on what part of the country you are in. :-D

Hope you get it worked out Adry.

I googled the incidents you quoted and can see the concern, especially since the pop tart kid lost his first appeal. That was absolutely absurd, that means the law agrees with these ridiculous actions.

How can a pop tart gun harm you? How can a toy lego gun, the size of a quarter harm you? This all boils down to what their parents, and society of are teaching these children these days... because in the lego gun incident, it was the reaction of the kids that was of major concern.
Can't seven year old kids recognize a toy?

I have heard some schools have removed the state of Florida from the maps in the schools. Cause it looks kinda like a gun. :-D:-D

    Sorry Adry, thread jack over.

Wow that's fantastic Jeremy you can be sure that she'll get to the very top in life as kids that do well at such a young age invariably go on to do well overall :cool

    Pop tarts today, AK47s tomorrow.

At least, I am sure that is how they villianized it.

In the UK kids can only have pop tarts after passing their level 3 hot Jam certification, unless it's shaped like an AK then they are given 3 years of counselling on the benefits of passing the level 4 cert.

I have my theories, but this thread is about Adry's 'lil ninja. A little thread drift is always OK to me, but this ain't my thread. :cool

Adry, you mentioned a 'competition' staff. I am way behind in my martial arts. What is that, compared to the basic wood bo I am familiar with? Bo=staff? I would guess a child's staff/bo would not be the 6' one I use to play around with. Is it just a shorter version? Shorter and lighter? Just curious.

  39. Adrynalyne

    Adrynalyne Guest

The competition staffs are made out of graphite instead of solid wood. Real bo staffs are 2-3x as heavy and therefore are more damaging, but also are slower. A real strike with a graphite competition bo would probably break it in half.

She has a solid wood one here that she practices with normally to strengthen her arms.

The on in this post is the competition bo. You can usually spot them because they are flashy looking and really slender.

Interesting. Bet she is lightning fast with the lite one.

I like her choice of weapon. The bo/staff is a very underrated and deceptively effective weapon. If they won't let her use her staff at the school, maybe go old school?

NOT G rated!! Uses some offensive language! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IZQFJ6hZNJc

It is. In the hands of a master, it is much more effective against a sword, because of it's reach and forces a master spear user to use the spear as a shield instead of a spear, as spearing would leave the attacker, open to a brutal assault.

In my first job, many years ago, there was a tradition of tossing the new employees into the pool. I held off 6 people for a while, eventually, let them carry me over to the pool and toss me in. They carried me with a broom handle. No justification for me to actually hit any of them, but I held them at bay for a while. :-D

The bo or staff, can be a very efficient weapon, even in an armature's hands. And can be cleverly disguised as a walking aid for the older folk. Shorter, unless you are Gandolf, but even then very effective.
