I'm confused and not quite sure if I am going to make sense.

It seams I have two "My Documents" directorys. At first I thought one was mirrored but now I don't think so as some files that are in one are not in the other, specifically MP3 files that are supposedly there but are not displayed.

If I open WMPlayer all my MP3 files are shown but if I use something else some are missing.

I don't wan't two directorys, I don't want it mirrored if it is and I have no idea which is the "real" one if one is mirrored.

Can anyone shed any light on the My Documents directory.

I'm going to try and figure out the paths of both of them in the meantime.

    Cheers and thanks

There is a my documents folder for every single user. There isn't really a way around this. (C:\Documents and Settings\Username\My Documents)

There is also a global folder called shared documents (C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents).

You can't really get rid of them and make just one. You can of course be sure to always use the same one, but they are a part of windows and there is no good way to remove them.

    Hi Coco,

Thing is there is only one user, me and I show one My Documents under

    C:\Documents and Settings\TEMP\My Documents

    and another under

    C:\Documents and Settings\MyName\MyName's Documents

Both seem to have all the same files but I cannot figure why everything would default to the MyDocuments folder in the TEMP directory, they aren't temp files.

If I work on anything save anything etc it goes into the MyDocuments in the TEMP directory

It is most confusing having two folders with the same stuff in it and I don't want it in a temp folder

    Thanks

(Have I mentioned how much I hate MS WIN time to switch)

    Oh yeah

WHen I go to the My Documents folder from desktop I have no idea which folder it is looking at and it would also be nice to know that.

    Thanks again

By default the my documents folder on the desktop should go to the one in documents and settings, that is under your username.

C:\Documents and Settings\TEMP\ should not exsist. It's not part of windows normally. A folder created like this most likely means there is a user called TEMP on the computer. Right click my computer, select manage and then go to "local users and groups" to confirm that the user does not exsist.

If the user doesn't exsist I'd suggest simply deleting the temp folder and everything under it(once you're sure you have everything you want from it).

Also, just to double check things, you may want to check your system variables to make sure none of them point there (by default nothing should). You can check them by right clicking my computer and selection properties. Then go to the advanced tab and press the "Environment variables" button.

    Hi Coco,

I did as you suggested but under right click on MyComputer|Manage there is no option for me to select LOCAL USERS AND GROUPS. So I take that to mean that there is only the one user, me.

I then copied all the contents of the TEMP|MY DOCUMENTS into USERNAME|MY DOCUMENTS and then tried to delete the TEMP directory containing the other MY DOCUMENTS but WINDOWS would not let me, said it was required for the system to run.

SO I deleted evrything in the TEMP|MY DOCUMENTS. Now when I click on the desktop MY DOCUMENTS the folder is empty.

There are still contentts in the USERNAMNE/MY DOCUMENTS folder but are not displayed unless I navigate to that directory.

I also now see a third MY DOCUMENTS folder under DEFAULT USER.

    Now I'm really confused

    Cheers

I give up ....all I want is ONE folder where I keep all my stuff. I foolishly thought MS was smart enough when they came up with the MY DOCUMENTS idea.

Obviously I was wrong. I put a made up file in one of the directories and it shows up in the other and I have no idea which is the master or even WHY on this green earth would any MS bofoon would decide that it needed to be be in 3 different places.

I click on MY COMPUTER and up comes alist in the right Window
    Local Disk C
    CD Drive D
    Control Panel
    My bluetooth Places
    SHARED DOCUMENTS (folder)
    USerName Document's (folder)

and then in the left hand frames I have

    OTHER PLACES which lists
    My Network Places
    MyDocuments
    Shared Documents
    Control Panel

What in the world is the difference between The MY DOCUMENTS in the left frames and UserName Documents in the right?

So OK I think to myself "What if one is a mirror of the other?" So I load up iTunes for fun search for tunes and guess what I get two copies of each song in my playlist! I only have one copy on my drive but this Microshit insists on putting stuff where it doesn't belong.

    ARRRRRRRGH.

    Cheers
