My DVD-ROM up and got undetected.

One morning, I booted up my computer and my DVD-ROM drive didn't work anymore.

I tried reinstalling it by trying to find the drivers, but I only found the firmware. I did not get drive install disks with the computer. A search for drivers only revealed firmware updates that were useless, because the program said that 'it's not a JLMS XJ-HD166S DVD ROM drive, but a 'Generic DVD SCSI CD Rom drive!'.
Even the BIOS cannot find it, despite several detections. This thing is two years old, and it cannot read anything at all. It had stopped working when I got back from a weekend trip.

what happens when you put a disc in? does the light blink in an abnormal way?

you might use everest to find out what drive it is and where to get the firmware update

Putting discs in the drive turns them into french chocolate pudding. I mean doesn't read them. Light blinks normally and does nothing else after that.

I already know what type of drive it is, and I cannot install the firmware because the computer itself doesn't know what the drive is. What I am looking for is a driver for the aforementioned DVD drive. If one even exists, I can get it up and running.

I will try Everest and get back to you, however.

Nothing on Everest, and there are no drivers.

I've declared the DVD-ROM dead, and it will have to go into the add-on graveyard. Thanks for your help, though.

Hmm... Have you recently installed Nero? specifically In CD? If you have, uninstall InCD and see what happens.

im having a problem with both of my cd drives now suddenly not being recognized. what i did to make sure the drives were ok is one at a time i hooked a cd drive to the slave plug on the hard drive harness at it detects both of my drives that way. try doing that so you dont waste money. me im still trying to find out whats wrong with my secondary ide.

    ej25lvr: I tried it, it didn't work.

Phredrick: Nero is not installed on the DVD drive, for it is not a DVD/CD burner.

It's dead, guys. Thanks for your help, but it has ceased to be. I'm gonna try installing it in another computer at work and see where that gets me.

You might try setting BIOS to defaults. This worked for a friend of mine when her dvd rom stopped reading any sort of disc. When you say the drive turns it into chocolate pudding, are you saying the disc goes bad and no longer works?
