this is a place called lapahoehoe. the name means the tip of the smooth lava. it is a famous surf site and on this day we were giving an english visitor a whistle stop tour of the island. as we stood and watched the breathtaking surf crashing on the rocks, the sea literally plucked a man from the rock in front of us. his ten yr old son standing next to him was untouched. three local boys dove in after him (their bravery unquestionable) and pulled him further out to sea until help arrived, desperately trying to keep him afloat on their boogie boards. hubby called emergency and a helicopter pulled him from the raging sea. once on ground they tried vainly to resuscitate him, but to no avail. it was like a movie unfolding before our eyes. the experience changed forever the way our young english friend viewed life, and she returned to england, changed her job, ditched her boyfriend, and took charge of her own life in a way most people fail to do. i have often thought of deleting this photo from my 'favorites' folder, but it serves as a reminder that life is fragile, and one must 'seize the day'.

Maybe you just got me at an emotional moment, but reading this makes shivers run down my back and I want to weep. For good reason...for the impact it had on your friend. Don't delete this photo from your files....it may be riddled with sadness but it also holds the key to someone else unlocking their life through the tragedy :) Thanks for sharing that difficult memory Laurie.

this is pahoehoe lava. pahoe means rippling, so the name means much rippling. there are two sorts of lava, this and a'a which is sharp honeycomb type thing. a'a is the sound you make walking on it. the hawaiian names for volcanic stuff are the accepted geological terms in the science.

mauna loa. the name means 'long' mountain, and is in fact the largest single mountain mass in the world, although slightly shorter than mauna kea, which is the tallest mountain in the world. hawaii holds a whole number of records for all sorts of natural phenomina.

a lot!! :) no idea, but this is the middle of the pacific, so however deep that is. lol, a lot. i know that mauna kea is 14,000 ft, so whatever the hight of everest is 29,000, minus 14,000, and plus some more. :) 5.6 miles from the floor? i think

That's what we call Frangipanis, they grow wild in Queensland, which is mainly tropical too. I have one around the side of the house. It must be about 15 feet tall. It doesn't get watered much, or anything, but still grows vigorously. They like the heat.

The variety below is tinged whith pink, instead of yellow.

yep, thats the stuff. we have pink ones too, and darker yellow ones. they both 'last longer' when cut then the 'ordinary' ones. this is what most hawaiian leis are made of.

Here is probably one of my most pleasing picturesque photos I took on the McKenzie River October 2004.

Abby`ll concur...and you`ll see, when spring returns, I`ll post some fingerlakes pics that`ll blow you folks away, especially those of you that see NY as a concrete/macadam/steel jungle. That`s a TINY part of this beautiful state...you`ll see. Until then I`m enjoying the pics I`m seeing in a huge way.

We don't have "buttes" in England. I had to learn to say it correctly...everyone laughed when I called them butts ;)

Just another one of those cultural words.......
