My LAN icon won't go away!

This is PC is hooked up via dial-up and I always have a LAN icon with an X on it since, obviously, I'm not on a network.

I've tried the typical ways of disabling it, namely:

Right click on the icon > Open Network Connections > Right click on Local Area Connection > Disable

Start > Settings > Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager > Network Adapters > Disable

Either way, as soon as I hit "disable" the whole thing just powers off and restarts. And as soon as Windows comes up, I get that Error report box.

Safe mode won't do it since none of the network drivers will be loaded.

Some things that might be considered: I'm running on Windows XP Home. Motherboard's an MSI K7N2 Delta 2 with an Nvidia NForce chipset. (Drivers updated)

"Hiding" the icon just won't cut it. Yeah, I'm OC. This is really bugging the heck out of me.

Are you using Service Pack 2?

You could try right-clicking the Local Area Connection in the Network Connections control panel, selecting Properties and uncheck the two boxes at the bottom of the General tab, but you've most probably already tried that.

Failing that, you may be able to disable the LAN by entering the motherboard's BIOS and doing so from there. There should be something in the motherboard manual about it (usually in the section about the BIOS options, obviously).
