My Music folder (XP pro)

Hope someone can help with this one, I'm lost but then again I'm not that proficient. I have no idea if this caused by a setting that was changed or if I have something more serious going on. (spyware,etc.)
Recently each time I access a music file from the My Music folder a copy of that file "appears" in the same folder. If I attempt to delete the new file another copy appears! As you can imagine this soon takes up a hell of a lot of space. I tried deleteing the entire folder then creating a new one from a backup on an external hard drive that has no extra "copies" but as soon as I access a file from the new folder it starts the process all over.
Microsoft Updates are current, I have Spyware Blaster installed, have run Norton Antivirus, the free "Housecall" scan from Trend Micro and the following spyware removers: Microsoft Beta, Adaware SE, Spybot S&D, they are all up to date and show no problems. I'm hoping it is a simple setting that I've overlooked, thanks for any assistance.

 

What program exactly are you using to access the files (Windows Media Player, itunes, ect)?

Do the files remain after a reboot?

In Windows Explorer, go to Tools/Folder Options. Click on the View tab, and uncheck "Hide file extensions for known file types". Then click Apply, then OK. Do the original file and the copy have the same file extension?

Right click on them and select Properties. Check the size of the original versus the copy.

This might give us more info.

Thanks for your prompt reply. I am using Windows Media Player to open the files, the copies do have the same file extension (mostly mp3) and they are exactly the same size. They are still there after a reboot.
