My Network Place

Hi everyone,
I have 3 computers 1 wired 2 wireless running WINXP on all 3; networked by a Linksys WRT54GS router. The wired and one wireless computers can see eachother but the 3rd machine cannot see the workgroup, it cannot even see it's self in My Network Place. The "Bad" machine can ping the other 2 but the "good" machines cannot ping the "bad" all 3 can access the internet. I have disabled the windows firewall and uninstalled all anti virus programs (for now) but still have the problem, I have TCP/IP 6 installed and file and print sharing is enabled. I also have wkssvc.dll installed does anyone have a solution to my problem.

try this:
start - control panel - network connections
right click on local area connection and go to properties
in the general tab, find internet protocol in the list there and click on it. then click properties.
click on advanced
click WINS tab
Is netbios over tcp/ip disabled?

 

KingSteve thanks for the reply, netbios over TCP/IP was disabled I enabled it and it still isn't working.

 

you might have to reboot or something. give that a try quick.

are the workgroup names identical on all 3 computers? they should be WORKGROUP case sensitive by default, so if you didnt change them you should be good. worth checking though.

right click on my computer - properties - computer name tab - click change

 

All 3 machines have the same workgorup name, this is driving me nuts, also it was working one day and not the next with nothing changing from working to not working

 

bleh, k try this. start - run - type services.msc

is Computer Browser service started? if it is, try to restart it. if not, obviously start it up.

 

Computer Browser service was started I restarted with no change

 

k My Computer properties - hardware - device manager
view - click devices by connection and check show hidden devices - down farther in that list youll find netbios over tcp/ip again. right click - properties. make sure under general tab, 'use this device' is enabled. driver tab, make sure the current status is started.

im just throwing out ideas at this point.

 

Everything is as you mentioned, nothing wrong there

do you have a folder shared on the computer? are you able to browse that computer by name by going Run \\computername ?

 

I cannot browse any other computer and I do have shared folders on each computer

 

Why do you think that I can't even see the bad computer in My Network Place?

 

its usually caused by netbios or file and print sharing being disabled. either that or a firewall or a bad IP address or something. but from your first post, you said your FW was disabled, file and print sharng enabled, netbios was disabled like you said but you enabled that and still no luck. you can ping and get out to the internet, but cant access other computers that youre able to ping... im stumped.

 

Please try Network magic it will solve all your problems.
