Hello. I have some major problems with my PC. I'm not ready to reformat yet so I really hope someone has another viable alternative/solution.

First off, the 'Start' button is missing along with the rest of the taskbar. My drive won't recognize blank cds/dvds, I can't run JAVA-based apps, proggies, etc. There are 2 or 3 critical processes missin under the 'Processes' tab in Windows Task Manager, I can't copy/paste, I can't drag/drop, I can't run any online virus scanners and I can't access System Restore. I tried runnin it through command line but I always get a message sayin 'System Restore is not able to protect your computer. Please restart your computer, and then run System Restore again.' Yea, did that about 10 times and the same message keeps poppin up. I tried accessin it through safe mode but that didn't do any good, either.

Hell, even the Windows key is disabled. Oh and yea not to mention Windows Installer. So I can't install/uninstall anything. I tried to re-enable some of the stopped services through the System Config Utility as well as few other tricks, but they all failed. If someone can help me get my PC back up to snuff I would be ever so grateful.

Sounds like you have serious issues, possibly in the registry. This may or may not be Malware related, however in order to rule out malware you will need to get your OS running before we can work on this.

I would recommend posting in the Software Forum to get your system back operable and then coming back to this thread to run the Malware Cleaning steps. It sounds like you may need to do a Repair of your OS.

Someone from 'Software' told me to reload Windows. I asked for steps on doin this but it's been 3 days and I have yet to receive a response. I'm used to reformatting, but reloading is new to me as I've never done it before. Any help would be appreciated.

Since this is a Software issue it would need to be handled in that forum.

Do you have the Windows disc?

Yea, I do. Someone responded in 'Software'. Thanx for your response, though.

If you format and reinstall you will not need to come back to this thread because you will have wiped anything you had.

You could do a repair reinstall of Windows if you didn't want to format but it's up to you. Someone in the Software Forum can help you with this.

Either way, once your back up and running I would check out the thread below.
