My hp Pavilion stops responding when it is loading the desktop, the drive busy light stops flashing and then the mouse and keyboard stop working and it does not finish loading the task bar or start button I have tried getting in through safe mode but it does the same thing except it never makes to the desktop it stops at the windows xp screen. The one thing that has happened is I moved and the movers moved it after they were told not to by my brother so later on I found it stuck in a corner on the floor so I don't know if how hard it was sat down, I also disconnected my modem from it and it has been hooked up for 6 years so I'm wondering if that may have something to do with it, I tried to see if it would read a cd or dvd but no luck the drive lights up then nothing i can't afford to restore it back to factory settings I have some important files on there that I had not put on my external drive yet, can someone please give me some advice as to what I can do to get it back up.:cry

It sounds to me like something on the hard disk has been damaged in transit. That shouldn't prevent you booting from CD though.

    1. look at the boot priority in the system BIOS. It is more than likely trying to boot from the HD before the CD.

    2. Winows has a built in recovery feature that will attempt to repair any errors. You may be able to get to it by using the system recovery here

    3. If you cant recover then download a Ubuntu Boot CD from here and boot from this. This will allow you to back up your data to removable media. You can then carry out a destructive system recovery as described in the link in bullet point 2.

    Hope this helps

I tried the system recovery and it stop responding while copying the files I am so frustrated I am considering doing a complete restore of the hard drive, I'm trying to find my restore cd but it's not looking good so if I can not find it or do a complete restore I am going to try to get the moving company to pay for a new one.

Getting money out of moving companies for damage is often like pulling teeth. While a dining room table broken into two pieces is a no-brainier, it's harder to prove negligence on internal damage (such as the hard drive), even if the moving company boxed up the computer as part of their services (I went through this with a refrigerator where the compressor mysteriously failed the moment it was plugged in at the new house. Since the 'frig was over 10 years old, the moving company denied the claim ever after a lot of kicking and screaming :tas ).

If you decide to pursue the claim with the moving company, call a few local PC shops and get estimates (preferably written) on the cost of replacing the drive with one of similar capacity plus the cost of reinstalling Windows and any other licensed software such as Microsoft Office. If you can't get the full amount, try negotiating for a dollar amount to either do the work yourself or apply to the cost of a new PC.

    Hope this helps. :)
