My Security Cameras, H.264 And Quicktime In Browsers

    Hi,

I can access my security camera system by plugging it into our local network - done that.

I then browse to the system via its IP address in a browser window and log in - no problem. HOWEVER, then I hit a snag of Quicktime being unavailable and as far as I recall, there's some reason I can't use H.264. This means I get no pictures.

I'd like to straighten the cameras; over time they move a little out of place, probably from the strong winds we get but without either one of the computers or the tablet being able to use H.264 (what exactly is that?) or Quicktime, I can't look at what the cameras are seeing while I adjust them and have to keep jumping off the ladder and going back inside and then trying to remember which way is which - when it comes to the rotation, it's worse than looking into a mirror and trying to go the right way, just doesn't seem to be intuitive.

This laptop is XP Pro SP3 and has a Firefox version 29.0.1 available and if I dug around, I could probably track down older versions of Firefox, possibly back to version 3, if that helps. I know I had all this working sometime in the past but nothing seems to work it now and I suspect it has to do with updates and disabling of Quicktime.

The tablet is Kitkat (Android 4.4.2) and has the 'blue' browser, Chrome and Firefox on it. I can either connect the tablet directly to the cameras (if it can be got working!) or install TeamViewer onto it and connect it to the laptop, if the cameras can be got running on that!

I understand there are concerns about Quicktime's security but surely that isn't an issue if I'm only using it to view my cameras on my own network?

Anyway, if someone is cluey enough to point me in the right direction, I'd very much appreciate it and so will my legs!

    EDIT:
I forgot to mention, Quicktime isn't even installed as a disabled plugin and somehow I never really got the hang of Quicktime.

I can of course try Internet Explorer - haven't yet but will in a moment. Basically, any info to get me back to being able to run my cameras off a computer through a browser again is what I need.

    Thanks.

Most DVRs I have played with are more IE friendly. Also when you hit the DVR they usually have you download a .cab file or some other (IE) plug in. So I'd look for a popup asking to install something - if not (and you're brave) go into IE and allow popups, prompt for ActiveX.
