Hey guys! I've browsed here before and really appreciate the site... and all the brains behind it! This time I need some help... I bought a domain name from yahoo to host a site. I built the site using Yahoo Sitebuilder. I did it all myself with my files... shouldn't have been anything with viruses. My computers are clean, as far as I know. (I run Norton Antivirus and various programs on them regularly.) Last week, my yahoo address started getting spam mail. 20-40 a day. I NEVER used to get spam mail. And the bad thing is that the other people who's addresses are posted on the site began getting spam mail to. Today I got an email from a customer (I assume) that came to my inbox telling me that my site has a virus. I thought I knew some stuff about computers... but I know nothing about this. Can somebody tell me what to do? I tried to run the HTML validator, but didn't know what to do with it once I ran it. Lol... the only errors I saw on the vaildator were little ones. But there were lots of them because I built it with Sitebuilder (I don't know how to write HTML.) Please, please help here, cuz I don't know what to do now and I have the feeling that Yahoo is not going to be much help.

Sounds like you put a mailto: link for your email address on the website.

    That just screams spam me!

I'm guessing if you are using a guestbook, it would be just as bad, and for others too, if their email address is available in any form.

Well, first of all, I would save all your files to your local machine.
Then, I would visit this thread and follow all the steps within. Then, optionally, to be sure that a problem doesn't come up again, I would visit this thread, and follow its instructions.

Then, you could delete everything on your site a re-load all your now malware-free files from your local machine BACK to the site.

But, I wouldn't be surprised if you and your friends continued to get spam. There's bots nowadays that will scrape addresses right off of sites.

Okay, guys... thanks for the help. I created a new address just for this site, designed a "contact us" form, and removed the "mail to:" links. I've already done the other threads, Mada_Milty. And everything says I'm clean. Basically, I was wondering if a virus could somehow attach to the site itself... outside of my files. Does that make sense? Cuz the stuff I uploaded is clean. I really appreciate the help!! :)

If you have a virus on the site, it means a Virus on Yahoo server.

They are scanning their servers and would not let Virus sit there.

In all truth No matter what you do, once you have a site the spammer would get to you. It is very annoying but that at the moment it is a fact of life.

Its only a fact of life if you rely on your email address to be on the site ;)
