Hey folks. I'm typing this at a laptop on campus because Rogers disconnected my home internet.

I've a pretty serious problem...a couple days ago Rogers automated message called and told me that my internet has been suspended because they found a virus on my computer and did not want it to spread.

Lo and behold I ran Kaspersky Antivirus (2K9) on my desktop and they found a bunch of bad stuff...no clue how they got there but I'll admit I've been very sloppy in keeping my firewall on while I play games...they must've accumulated over the past months.

Kaspersky restarted my computer for me...and since then I can't get back on. I would see the Welcome screen, click Owner, type my password, have it say "loading settings" and then go to a blank desktop, and then have it say "saving settings" and log back out.

I tried again in safe mode and what not but it still didn't work. I poked around and read about renaming/copying C:\windows\system32\userinit.exe to wsaupdater.exe" through XP CD recovery console.

So I tried that, but it says the userinit.exe file itself could not be found! I think the viruses and badware or whatever messed it up.

I finally did a repair XP, reactivated windows, and tried logging back on to Owner, still no luck...it loads settings then logs off right away..

I don't know what to do at this point. I have my XP CD but I don't want to reinstall a fresh copy of windows XP (i.e. reformat comp..god knows how many times I've done it) if there's anyway around it... don't want to lose all my vids and photos and songs (and siblings' work files) since I can't really log on to back them up. And it seems my home internet will be cut off as long as the viruses are still on my computer.. Any advice appreciated

Try another XP repair install, but this time create a new admin user and see if that lets you login....
