my english nephew, who is currently visiting, has been unable to access his email server. it is rumored that this company has 'gone down'. does anybody know anything? he has a number of important emails that he is waiting for, including his visa to Australia. any info would be appreciated. much aloha. PS. if this is not the right forum, as this is a 'proper' question, please redirect to the appropriate space. thanks.

so its just 'gone'? you're right when you said 'some individuals are upset'. is there anybody to contact? all his email addresses are on it amongst other things? the internet is not so much 'the day of information at your fingertips' as 'how to lose vast amounts of information at a touch of a button'. lol. any ideas? and thanks for the prompt reply. you guys never cease to amaze me. ps. my spellcheck cant find the word 'amongst' ??

theefool. yes dear, i know its a real word, i know what it means, and i even know how to spell it!. i was just surprised that my spellcheck (iespell) thinks its wrong. it isn't an English variation or something like that is it?

thanks boomm, i don't know what he can do. some of his addresses are written down, but of course he's halfway across the world at the moment, so that doesn't help any. as to the mail he's expecting, he will go the the Aussie visa place when he arrives there, and hopefully they will let him stay!!. if not it will probably be back to Hawaii. (which isn't exactly sad!). the visa has already been issued, so he cant apply for a new one. he has no reference #s, no proof, (proof of payment also on his email). it seems that in order to protect yourself properly from this sort of FUBAR, you would have to download every piece of paper that comes through, which kinda defeats the purpose.

I don't think I've ever had a spellchecker that would recognize that word. Archaic form of English and all.

wobbles it's on his email (or rather NOT on it). it doesnt matter what puter he's using.
presumably all the thousands of people using this service have all got the same problem. my nephew has been using them for years, so its not like the're new.

They are the same, just amongst isn't common usage in the States. Having originally been educated in Oxford English; I always want to use words like colour, armour, odour, amongst and so forth. They are correctly spelled but not common use. Besides people look at me like I'm weird or something when I do that; and I do it quite often.

That really sucks! Bit of wakeup call about the web, though--you could wake up one day and x or y site could be just gone.

I think I'm going to go spend some time downloading all my important information...

I have a friend who writes game books for the Conan roleplaying game for Mongoose publishing.

He is also a teacher at Indiana Business College.

So, when he writes for Mongoose, he uses the british way of spelling words, but when he teaches class he sometimes spells the certain words exactly as he spells them for Mongoose. His students always calls him out on this.

as a fairly well educated woman living in a not so posh town, people used to think i was wierd even when i was in england!! (mind you not all of that may have been down to the way i talk :) ) over here my excentricities are 'blamed' on the fact i'm english. i still spell english style, which would'nt be so bad if i was any good at it. :) aloha
