I have a forum site which uses mysql database but I am running low on space. I have found a new host with php and mysql and have signed up for them. How do I copy the database from my previous webhost and use it for my new one so I dont have to re-do my whole forums.

Most php-based forum software, like the popular phpBB, have a backup function in the Admin Panel. Back up your DB (database) to your local machine. It will contain the all the DB tables and the data in them. Install a fresh copy of the same version of your forum software on the new server, or download all the files before leaving the old ISP and upload them to the new. The former might be the best option in that it may have a routine in the install to create the DB, and then you can just restore from your backup. If you aren't provided an interface at the new ISP to load the data from your backup, their tech support may have to be asked to do it for you.

So what you are saying is that I can backup my database from the admin controls and just go on the other forum and click restore and it will transfer it?

If you have a fully installed forum of the same version at the new server, yes. Not "transfer" it so much as upload the data from your local backup in to the new empty DB. Are you running a phpBB forum?

Ya, I uploaded the forum to my new host, installed it, and uploaded the teplate that I was using. Everything there now exept all of the stuff from my other forums. They are both the same versions so now if I click restore on my new one it''l restore my whole database and my forums will be back to the way they were at my old host.

Well, it should. The Restore Database function will ask you for the location of the backup file on your local hard drive-- there's a Browse button-- just navigate to it and select it.

When i click backup it i get a security thing from my computer and I click that to allow download but it doesn't tell me where it downloaded to. Is there a default folder or something or whats the filename so i can search for it.

When I choose Full Backup and press Start Backup, my browser (Mozilla) asks what I want to do with the file (open, save). I choose Save, and Windows opens a Save dialog box that has a default filename of phpbb_db_backup.sql and it wants to put it in my My Documents folder by default. You should be seeing something similar.

I did all that. Everything is the way it was before but I have a big big big problem. My new forums are all up and stuff but the links are the same as the last one. If I go to admin panel it'll link to my old forums admin panel. Is there anyway I can fix this easy?

K not all of the links go to my old forums, just the login one and all of the top buttons like members usergroups and stuff. I can still get to my admin thing because it automatically logs me in and that link is ok

Perhaps you'll need to go into General Admin/Configuration and make sure all the domain reference stuff points to the new server URL.

I cant even log into my admin because it just goes back to my old forum site.

Ok I figured out how to do this. When I backup my database I have to change the domain name there to the new one then back it up. Then it'll restore with the right domain. I'll just reset my database and install over again. Thanks for all your help.
