Mysterious Random Shut Downs

  1. Hello, I was pointed to this site to ask about a problem I'm having. I'm not sure if it belongs here, but I'll post anyway and it can be moved if it doesn't fit.

I purchased, received, and assembled a new computer within the last month and it was working great up until tonight. Now, for some strange reason, it mysteriously shuts down for no apparent reason. Twice it has claimed that the "battery levels were extremely low" and the computer shut itself off to protect what I was doing.

How can the battery level be low on a desktop computer? I don't understand this. I'm running Win 7 64-bit with 8 gigs of RAM and an i5 processor. I've recently done virus and malware scans and have come up with nothing. Is something wrong with my computer? Could this UPS I bought along with the computer be causing some sort of problem? Are the power settings doing this? It's very distressing having a new personal computer start doing this barely into a month of owning it.

Please, someone help me with this.

Welcome aboard. Only thing I can think of is the BIOS coin battery on the mobo though I've never heard of a mobo with a low battery sensing circuit.:confused What's the make and model of your mobo just in case somebody did.

What I do when I build a new machine is stress it to the hilt with OCCT while the warranties are still in effect. The program will record some 15 parameters in chart form until you either stop it or you crash, may get a hint from that. Also take a look in the BIOS, there may be a setting in there.

I doubt it's your UPS as your machine would not know it's on one unless it's a good one that comes with a cable and install disc. Start with that and we take it from there.

  3. The mobo is a Gigabyte GA-P67X-UD3-B3. Also, the UPS did come with a USB cable and install disc. However since I've had this problem happen twice in one night, I've moved it to a simple power strip/surge protector.
