A customer was complaining of a slow system & freezing up at various times. I ran the scans as directed under the READ ME FIRST rules. ComboFix screwed up several programs from being able to launch so I restored the system to the previous restore point & ran the other scans again. MBAM & SAS only really found MyWebSearch items as threats. RootRepeal took FOREVER to complete & found several items locked. I attached the logs. Thanks in advance!

    :confused

Because of the number of recent threads you have in our forum and the above quote - I'll ask "Are you fixing these computers as part of a business service?".

I'm an IT technician for a business. Their main tech was laid off a few months ago & I occasionally get overwhelmed with the new workload. I am the only tech for this business' 2 sites. I use the malware removal guides laid out at this site on a regular basis & most of the time the procedures work GREAT. A few times (like this one) things don't go smoothly, so I post my logs and ask for help.

I don't mean to offend anyone if my activity here constitutes as a business service. I do feel guilty that I'm sponging free advice from hard working experts like yourself. I'm just a guy trying to keep my job in a tough economy. I intend to learn from my experiences here & eventually give back to this website community. I found that I can't really do that until I've gone through proper training for malware removal. Until then, is this kind of activity OK or am I at risk of getting expelled from the site?

    Hello again, chiepler

We recommend having atleast 2 GB of RAM for running Windows Vista without experiencing system lags.
There are two anti-virus programs installed: Norton Internet Security & Panda Internet Security 2009

I would suggest you follow these steps to uninstall "Panda Internet Security 2009"
    http://www.pandasecurity.com/homeusers/support/card?id=60027

*A new version of SUPERAntiSpyware is available.
    • Please uninstall your current version (this is necessary).
    • Then download this SUPERAntiSpyware
    • Install this new version. It may tell you that you need to reboot to complete the installation. You must reboot at this time.
    • After the reboot, run SUPERAntiSpyware and immediately click the Check for Updates button to get more updates for the database.
    • Now run a new "Quick scan" of your system. And attach this new log.

    Now also update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Open MBAM > click on the "Update" tab > "Check for Updates".
    • Then click on the "Scanner" tab and select "Perform quick scan".
    • Attach the resulting new log

    Using Add/Remove please uninstall:
    Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6

Now we need to use ComboFix.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware, firewall...etc) programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. *Remember to re-start them before coming back online.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
If it asks you to overide the previous file with the same name, click YES.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Next - Open CCleaner - select "Cleaner" > "Run Cleaner" <---use this function ONLY!

Now install the latest Sun Java Runtime Environment

Then run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

Please attach the below logs to your next reply:
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
    • updated SASlog.txt
    • updated MBAM log

Make sure you tell me if you had any problems running this procedure and give a description of how things are working now!

I got as far as running the combofix program as you described. After it was done & generated the log, I can't run any programs. I get the following message:
    [program_path/xxxxxxx.exe]
"Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion".
I had this problem before as well & had to reboot to a restore point. I haven't done that yet this time. Is there another way to fix this?

Just try rebooting the machine and let us know what happens. Usually rebooting will do the trick.

Panda Internet Security was not installed, as far as I could tell. There's a program called Pando Media Booster though. (?) MBAM & SAS didn't find anything. It seems to be running better. I will be installing more RAM soon to boost performance.

    here's the updated logs...
(I installed the Java update after running the scans.)

    :)

It shows up in both the "newfiles" and the "Getunkey" logs - so we'll remove the last references to it.

Now download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Do not change any check box options!!
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the "Input script here:" part of the window.
    • Now click the Execute button.
    • Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    • Click Yes to the "Reboot now?" question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    • Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.

*Remember to remove this folder on the desktop: C:\Users\Jessica\Desktop\AntiVirus Tools 4-12-10 ;)

Open CCleaner - select "Cleaner" > "Run Cleaner" <---use this function ONLY!

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
