Alright folks. I seem to have a nasty boot virus on my PC that is preventing me from fully starting up my hard drive. I already tried my boot disks and booting with my antivirus software to scan the drive, neither of them have worked. I have Windows XP professional. What happens is, I start up, and it gets all the way to the Windows XP loading screen in which there is a bar and a blue loader that moves across the bar. It is on this screen for about 5 seconds or so and then after that for a split second there is a Blue screen that flashes in which white lettering and numbers slides down the screen, the computer then restarts on it's own. It will continue going through this process over and over again preventing me from "fully" starting up the PC. I've never ever seen this blue screen before, and assume it is a virus preventing me from starting up Windows XP and my hard drive. Any suggestions besides re-formatting my hard drive?

What does the Blue Screen message say if its readble words?

Did you install any drivers or software just before this happened, as an incompatible driver can cause, BSODs as can Overclocking.. are you Overclocking?

BUT try and see if you can boot into Safe Mode ( with Networking ) and run some of the cleanup tools in the guide below, albiet HJT does need to be run from Normal Mode for an accurate log file. *the steps to boot into Safe Mode are in the guide below*

Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.

    - Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support

Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:

    Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis

When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too (these scans are covered in steps 6 & 7 of the READ & RUN ME sticky)
    • Bitdefender
    • Panda Scan
    • HijackThis

Never mind. I used the Windows XP Professional disk in MS-DOS mode to re-write the boot sector which had been corrupted, I'm guessing by a virus. Thankfully, that worked and I'm up and running again. Thanks for the help though.
