    Hi, I've been spending the last day or so trying to destroy a monster in my wife's computer.

    She got hit with Galileo Security Cleaner, and when I saw it I told her not to use the computer at all and began fighting it. Initially before coming to your forums I ran Malwarebytes and it found a couple of items, and deleted them. I then put on AVG, and it found a couple more and deleted them. But something was still awry, I could tell it wasn't gone and I tried several other detectors that I trust (SB S&D, etc) and they all said "no threats." Yet my browser was being hijacked, and Malwarebytes was telling me it was trying to connect outbound to malicious IPs. Thus, I headed over here and started the steps to get my logs created.

    During Combofix, it detected a rootkit, and blasted away. It also was the only thing that identified Galileo (initially warned that it needed to be turned off thinking it was a real product). It took out Galileo and left a huge list of potential problems you'll see in the logs.

    Things seemed better as I ran the next two steps, but quickly something felt wrong again, and MG Tools which put the files in its folder but then reboots so I didn't get a log from it yet. Right after that, MalwareBytes protecting the computer started detecting attempts to connect to malicious sites again.

    So, that's where I stand right now.

    I have gone through all the steps and the log files are attached, however the last step is giving me some issues and I need to take another look when I get home tonight.

    Help please! :major

    I want you to run TDSSKiller so refer to the below for how to do so.

    TDSSkiller - How to run

    Then, try and run MGTools.exe again ensuring that you are running it from the root of the boot drive which is usually C:\ (In your case it's D:\ I see.) Then see if you have a D:\MGLogs.zip, if NOT, then you need to do the below:

    Please click Start, Run, and enter cmd and click OK. This will open a command prompt window. Enter the below commands at the command prompt each followed by the enter key. The bold black are commands. The purple is merely informational.

    cd \MGtools <-- this changes to the MGtools folder and the prompt should change to D:\MGtools>
    ShowNew <-- this will try to run all another scan from MGtools. Tell me what error messages, if any, you see.
    GetRunKey <-- this will try to run all one scan from MGtools. Tell me what error messages, if any, you see.

    Have a D:\MGLogs.zip now?

    I'll do that when I get home. I also realized that I hadn't installed the most recent java update after removing all of them. It's sitting on a jump drive.

    Should I install the java update before the steps you outline below, or install it later?

    Thanks!

    Ok, that allowed it to work. I'm attaching the logs from the TDSSKiller as well as the MGTools zip.

    Bit more to do, but TDSSKiller was our saviour.

    Did you deliberately set up the below proxy yourself? If not, include it in our fixables list.

    • R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:61273

    Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:61273
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB} - (no file)

    After clicking Fix exit HJT.

    Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    SecCenter::
    {445C2AD3-E094-4496-9AB2-015867D4734C}
    File::
    D:\Documents and Settings\Rebecca Case\Application Data\CEB6.FCE
    d:\windows\system32\drivers\wygff.sys
    d:\windows\Skuxatoqezi.bin
    d:\windows\Ymama.dat
    Folder::
    d:\documents and settings\Rebecca Case\Local Settings\Application Data\{6A64C0CB-F63A-43E6-9E2E-798951586E30}
    Registry::
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB}]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes\{0BC6E3FA-78EF-4886-842C-5A1258C4455A}]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes\{9BB47C17-9C68-4BB3-B188-DD9AF0FD2A69}]
    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes\{9BB47C17-9C68-4BB3-B188-DD9AF0FD2A69}]
    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes\{0BC6E3FA-78EF-4886-842C-5A1258C4455A}]

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    If after running Combofix you discover none of your programs will open up, and you recieve the following error: "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion". Then the answer is to REBOOT the machine, and all will be corrected.

    Reboot your machine and install the most current and up to date version of Java available here at the below link:

    Java Runtime 6

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista or Windows7) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

    Let me know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now!

    ComboFix again found Galileo when starting, warned that the anti-spam program needed to be turned off and then warned again, just like last time. It did not find a rootkit at that time though, and went through the 50 stages.

    It then rebooted my system without me prompting it to.

    ComboFix also updated during this process too. Log is attached.

    I am seeing windows security alerts icon again, which I realized I haven't been seeing for awhile.

    No problems running MGtools either. The logs are attached.

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required (If we renamed it please rename it back to Combofix.exe.
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
      related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
        for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    Update:

    After the steps last night, I ran MalwareBytes and it didn't find anything.

    So I then reinstalled AVG, and ran its rootkit detection which was clean. Then ran the full scan, and it found and quarantined Generic Trojan 13.

    So it didn't get fully cleaned and I'm wondering if there are any other latent ones.

    What do you suggest as a next step, given that I still found a trojan with AVG after all these steps. Do you want me to run any other programs to find any other files?

    If you need me to check the logs of where AVG found the Trojan Genric 13 and the exact name of it (.chcc or something) I can have my wife get that information to me.

    Yes, we need the exact path of the file, as it may well just be a false positive with AVG.

    What seems odd is it is not appearing in my virus vault now. I saw it this morning, and now nothing is there.

    I'm running another AVG scan now and will update you.

    Let me know. As I said, it could just be a false positive from AVG. ;)
