Nasty Virus/Trojan

I have a pretty nasty virus and/or Trojan on my computer and have no idea how to get rid of it.
Norton keeps popping up to have found Trojan.Vundo.

One thing that makes this so nasty is that it shuts down any kind of anti-virus software or malware removal software. I can't run HiJackThis. I can't run Killbox, or the Symantec Vundo removal tool. It even closes out any Internet Explorer window that has anything about malware removal (I'm surprised I'm able to type this right now).

If I open any of these softwares, it opens up and immediately closes, before I can do anything.

System Restore has been disabled as well for anything before when i got the virus.

I don't know if there are multiple viruses or trojan on my machine. It's quite possible. I don't really know what is on my machine. Ad-Aware and Spybot (the only ones that will actually run) have not found anything.

Can anyone help me with this one?

I don't know what to do and I'm contemplating whiping out my hardware and starting from scratch!
    Thank you!!!!

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please run this Virtumonde aka Trojan Vundo Removal But run it multiple times until it believes you are clean. Than attach the log here. See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post

After doing the above, things will be better but you still will not be clean even though it will not find anything. You then have to move on to the below so we can finish the cleanup.

Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, renaming, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.
    • Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
    • Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
    • Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.
    • After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around.
    • When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:
      • CounterSpy - only for Windows XP, 2K, & NT users
      • AVG Antispyware log - ONLY IF NEEDED you were not able to run CounterSpy. - only for Windows XP, 2K, & NT users
      • Bitdefender - from step 6
      • Panda Scan - from step 6
      • runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
      • newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat
      • HijackThis
NOTE: You can only attach 3 files in a single message so it will require that you use two messages to attach all of these logs!

I appreciate your reply, however, the problem is that I have already tried this but my computer shuts down EVERYTHING that has to do with removing virus/spyware.

I'm unable to run this tool (which I already tried) and I'm unable to run HijackThis, so I can't post a log.

I couldn't even open this page, because of references about the virus (Internet Explorer kept shutting down). I had to access this message from another machine.

    PLEASE HELP!!!!!

If you cannot get us any logs we cannot help you because all we can do is guess!
    • Did you rename HijackThis.exe to analyse.exe? This is CRITICAL as stated in the READ ME.
    • Have you tried running scans in safe mode?
    • Have you tried logging into a different user account?
    • Have you tries a different browser like FireFox instead of IE?
    • Did you run a full scan with Norton in safe mode? I know Norton is totally useless against Vundo but in most cases Vundo does not cause problems like you are describing. You may have additional problems.
    • Did you even attempt to get the logs from GetRunKey and ShowNew? These are just simple batch files that almost always will run. Malware rarely blocks batch files from running.
    • Do you have another PC you can download programs to and get them extracted...etc? And then copy them to the problem PC via flashdrive, CD,...etc?
We need logs to help you. If all you can say is nothing works, then all we can say is format and reinstall.

Thank you for your reply! Here's what I have done so far:

    - I have run scans in safe mode and in normal mode. I was finally able to run the VundoFix.exe file and it removed 3 files. However, this has not completely alleviated all problems, so I'm thinking this may not be my only issue. i have run the scan several times, but it has not found anything else.
    - I renamed HijackThis.exe to analyse.exe in safe mode and I was able to run it just long enough to quickly hit the scan and save a log, before it shut down again. I'm attaching the log. It still won't run in normal mode even with the new file name
    - I have located a file that may be the problem, but I can't run killbox.exe to turn it off.
    - I have also run the scans for GetRunKey and ShowNew and i'm attaching those logs as well.
    - I have run a full scan with Norton in safe mode and normal mode, but nothing else was found.
    - I have run a scan with AVG Anti-Spyware, which has only found cookies so far.
    - I've run CCleaner.

I appreciate your patience. I will try to follow the steps you provide.

    Thank you!!

I see you have CounterSpy installed. Did you scan with it? Do you have a log?

If possible, you need to get HijackThis off your Desktop. You have it here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Amy\Desktop\Tools\HJT1991.exe

That is exactly where we specify not to install it.

I don't see any major issues especially ones that would stop you from running tools! Let's fix the below and see what happens. If you still have issues, you may want to consider uninstalling all the Symantec and Windows OneCare Libe software.

Uninstall the below old versions of software:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 1
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 5
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9
Morpheus 5.2 (remove only) <-- should have been uninstalled in step 0 of the READ ME
Viewpoint Media Player <-- should have been uninstalled in step 0 of the READ ME

Run HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {53B5F2B1-94DD-43E5-8187-EB4E31F00701} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\A02LnNRW.dll
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {8A61098D-612B-4EF2-943D-64E920684061} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\fcywwtr.dll (file missing)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_01\bin\jusched.exe"
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it
double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    • Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:
    • Now click the 'Done' button.
    • Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    • You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt
    Now run Ccleaner!

Now attach the below new logs and tell me how the above steps went.

    1. Avenger
    2. GetRunKey
    3. ShowNew
    4. HJT

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Reminder Note: Once we have determined you are malware free you will need to disable System Restore, reboot, and re-enable system restore per step 8 of the READ & RUN ME. This only applies to if using WinXP or WinMe.

I followed all your steps below and I think this did the trick. It was the A02Ln...dll file that wouldn't let HijackThis or KillBox run. So, once I got that off with The Avenger, I was able to run HijackThis again.

Thank you so much for your help!!

I did run CounterSpy, but did not get a log, because the scan got interupted.

Now you are using HijackThis totally wrong!!!

    You have this:

    C:\Documents and Settings\Amy\Desktop\Tools\HijackThis.exe

You must install it properly and you must rename it. It should be run from here:

    C:\Program Files\HijackThis\analyse.exe or C:\Program Files\HJT\analyse.exe

Please correct this and attach a new log. Delete the other copies of HJT that you have in several places to avoid running the wrong copy again.

You also forgot to attach the log from Avenger that was requested.
