    On a Win XP Home computer, have tried to update NAV 2004 - received the error that "The files below could not be updated by Liveupdate: navapsvc.ex^, navlnch.dl^, navlucbk.dl^" Error LU1806 - I've tried everything Symantec suggests short of reinstalling the operating system. Tried to uninstall and reinstall NAV, tried to delete the files and copy files from another system...it still won't update completely. I know I am not the only one to have this problem, I have encountered and corresponded with others. Any help out there?

    i had been using Norton Antivirus 2002 and it wouldn't install a Symantec Redirector Update... after trying numerous times, Liveupdated failed to read my Subscription to antivirus definitions and at that point i was just fed up and completely uninstalled Norton and downloaded Avast Anti-virus (free home edition)... i like it much better...

    Nixing NAV is not what I want to do. I was hoping to find someone who had this same problem and had found a solution. But, thank you..:)

    Im sorry, were mainly anti Nortons here and this is another reason, forgetting the recent mess on the release of 2004 when it disabled many people who were upgrading from 2003. So, most of us know lack experience with the program, sorry. Try a BETTER, free program next time :)

    Found this people say works, but at your own risk, of course :)

    This happens because LiveUpdate is attempting to rewrite files that are already current, and the product catalog file for LiveUpdate does not reflect that they have been updated, which is causing the LiveUpdate to fail.

    For example, LiveUpdate installs a Common Client update. The Common Client core gets updated, but the product catalog file shows that they are an earlier version. In this case, 1.0 is listed in Product.Catalog.LiveUpdate, when the version on the computer is actually 1.0.8.1

    To fix this, the Product.Catalog.LiveUpdate file must be modified to reflect that the current version is installed on the computer.

    To modify the Product.Catalog.LiveUpdate file
    Locate the Product.Catalog.LiveUpdate file. (Make sure that you locate the file that begins with "Product" and not a file that begins with a number in front of "Product." The files location varies with the operating system.
    Windows 98/Me: C:\Windows\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\LiveUpdate
    Windows 2000/XP: C:\Documents And Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Liveupdate

    Right-click the file, click Properties, remove the Read Only attribute, and apply the change.
    Open the Product.Catalog.LiveUpdate file in Notepad or similar text editor.
    Locate the product that you are having the problem with. In this example, the product is the common client core:

    PRODUCT=COMMON CLIENT CORE
    PRODUCT DESCRIPTION=COMMON CLIENT CORE

    Locate the Version line. This example is a version for the common client core:

    VERSION=1.0

    Append the correct version number to the end of the version number. For example:

    VERSION=1.0.8

    Save the file and exit Notepad.
    Right-click the Product.Catalog.Liveupdate file and click properties. Change the attributes to Read Only.

    Hi There Shirley
    I threw out NAV ages ago. Downloaded and installed AVAST (took about 20 minutes). Upgrades usually every 2 - 3 days - I do it manually but it has an auto upgrade - and it is very fast, very trouble free, and it is beautiful in its level of protection and what it does when it finds a virus that you have managed to acquire. So mate,despite all the good advice above I would throw away NAV and go to a simpler (free) system which updates without hassles.
    Good luck
    Robert

    Have you tried this already? I am also a NIS 2004 and NAV 2004 user:

    Symantec Products

    Document ID:2002071915240913
    Last Modified:07/14/2004

    Error: "LU1806 (or LU1816 or LU1817): LiveUpdate was not able to install any of the <number> updates that you selected . . . "

    Situation:
    When you run LiveUpdate, you see the error message "LU1806 (or LU1817) (or LU1816): LiveUpdate was not able to install any of the <number> updates that you selected. For more information, click the "+" sign next to the update or updates that did not install."

    Solution:
    This section is meant for those using a Consumer product, such as Norton AntiVirus 2004.

    If you use an Enterprise product, such as Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 8.0, skip to the Technical Information section near the end of this document.

    Before you begin:

    If you have not done so since the last time that you ran LiveUpdate -- or if you are not sure if you have done so -- restart the computer. Some updates require a restart and can cause this message if you have not restarted.

    If the error is LU1806 and in the list of programs, you see an X next to Symantec Redirector:

    instead of the instructions below, follow the steps on the page Error: LU1812 or LU1806 (or both) when downloading the Symantec Redirector.

    Step 1: Go to Interactive Mode
    LU1806, LU1816, and LU1817 are general error messages. To solve your problem, you need to look for a more precise, second error message. LiveUpdate must be running in Interactive mode for this second message to show up completely.

    To run LiveUpdate in Interactive mode

    1. Follow the instructions for your operating system:
    * Windows 98/2000
    On the Windows desktop, click the Start button > Settings > Control Panel. In the Control Panel window, double-click Symantec LiveUpdate.
    * Windows Me
    On the Windows desktop, click the Start button > Settings > Control Panel. In the Control Panel window, double-click Symantec LiveUpdate. (If you do not see the Symantec LiveUpdate icon, click "view all Control Panel options.")
    * Windows XP
    On the Windows desktop, click the Start button > Control Panel. In the Control Panel window, double-click Symantec LiveUpdate. (If you do not see the Symantec LiveUpdate icon, in the left side of the window, click "Switch to Classic View.")
    2. On the General tab, click "Interactive mode."
    3. Click OK.
    4. Run LiveUpdate again.

    If you still see the LU1806, LU1816, or LU1817 message, go on to the next section.

    Step 2: Determine the exact error
    The initial LU1806, LU1816, or LU1817 messages are general errors. In most cases, there is a second, more specific error message. How to view that message, and what to do when you see it (or if you do not) is described next.

    This first illustration shows what you will see when the general LU1806, LU1816, or LU1817 message appears. Note that there is a white "X" in a red circle next to the product or component for which the download failed. Also note that there is a "+" sign to the left of the white-on-red "X". (In this case the screen shot shows the LU1806 error. (As you may have discovered, clicking the blue underlined link in the message takes you to this document.)

    To see the second error message

    1. When the error message appears, click the "+" sign that is to the left of the white-on-red "X".

    * If you see a gray dialog box with the title "The update was not completed. . . ." it means that a second error message is not available. Skip to the section "What to do if there is no second error message."
    * In most cases, when you click the "+" it will expand the selection, and a second line, also with a white-on-red "X" will be displayed. Go on to step 2.
    2. Click on this new, second line.

    When you do, a new error message will appear, as shown in this illustration:

    Then click the blue underlined link in this second message to be directed a solution.

    What to do if there is no second error message
    In some situations there will not be a second error message available. In this case, you will see a gray dialog box with the title "The update was not completed. The update process was unable to complete successfully. Please click the Details button for more information."

    In this second situation, please click the Details button. Follow the instructions in one of the next two sections, depending on what is displayed in the Details box.

    Note: These instructions are in collapsed sections.

    Click an icon to either expand ( ) or collapse ( ) each part. (If you cannot expand a part, then read the document Cannot expand sections in a Symantec Knowledge Base document.)

    If the Details box displays only your operating system and version of the software

    If the Details box displays your operating system, version of the software, and a list of files

    Let me know if this is of any assistance.

    I've had the same problem. I've read everything on the site and have double and triple checked my Internet settings to be sure I was following Symantics instructions.

    Using IE or Moilla Firefox, I get a page stating "Cannot find server" when I try to go to Symantic's support or download site.

    I'm able to access the Symantic download site using AOL so about once a week I manually download the updates for Norton Anti virus and Systemworks. I like their package, so . . .

    Perhaps with a different browser, LiveUpdate will run for you.

    I recently had the same trouble with my mother-in-law's machine. Went to Trend Micro and did an online virus scan. It found some nasty trojans that couldn't be removed, and I ended up formating and reinstalling Windows. You might want to check your machine out.

    Symantec/Norton is now a pretty crappy Anti-Virus Programme. They have one of the worst virus catch rates of any program. In fact they totally miss the newer .DLL virii, and in some cases they are missing about 25% more viruses than other checkers.

    I would Seriously reccomend NOD32 or AVG, they are free, they are updated much much more than Norton, and pick up many many more Virii than the craptastic NAV.
