Im having a hard time replacing this file. I have figured out that ndis.sys file has been modified in 4/17 2007 and that it is causing me reboots while trying to run battlefield 2. i found a thread telling what to do in a similar situation and now im wondering that could i use the instructions on that thread to fix my problems? or are the instructions based on the computer one is using? the thread is: http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=123297&page=3

The instructions posted in any given thread are specifc to that PC. THough sometimes the instructions may work for you or they may not.

    Please follow the steps below:

    - Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
    • Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis:

    Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis

Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around.

When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:
    • CounterSpy - only for Windows XP, 2K, & NT users
    • AVG Antispyware Log - ONLY IF NEEDED you were not able to run CounterSpy - only for Windows XP, 2K, & NT users
    • Bitdefender - from step 6
    • Panda Scan - from step 6
    • runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
    • newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat
    • HijackThis

here are the first three files as u reguested. I have followed all the steps in read and run me first. Took alltogether almost 15hours.. confused .. well. i found all kinds of monsters which i wasn't aware of.
Problems: I cannot restart in safe mode. its an endless loop. when trying to restart in safe mode computer boots and then it does it again and so on. so all my scans r done in normal mode. also with bitdefender i wasnt able to save log directly from the link program gave me. i did it by looking the results as html page and then saved the page as .txt i hope its okay. i can try to do it again later if needed.

my virus scan tells ndis.sys is infected by malware : spamtool.win32.agent.u
others u probably see from logs
    im using active virus shield.

    My comp:
    core 2 duo E6300 1.86Ghz @ 2.8Ghz
    3gb 800mhz corsair (2* dual channel kits)
    7900GS 256mb
and some stuff. if u need some info u cant find i assume u ask =)

Download Registry Search (see the link titled RegSearch Download Link)

    * Extract the files from Regsearch.zip into a folder.
    * Doubleclick regsearch.exe to start the program.
    * Enter PPTP-protokolla in the top area of the form and then click "OK".
    * Notepad will be opened with text in it (the file named RegSearch.txt will be saved in the program's folder as well). Attach this file to your next reply.

Sorry for taking so long to get back to you.

    - Pocket Killbox

Copy the contents of the below quote box to Notepad; Save As FixReg.reg to your Desktop; make sure File Type: is set to All Files (*.*).
    Close Notepad.

Locate FixReg.reg on your Desktop. Double-click on it and answer 'Yes' when asked if you want to merge with the registry.

    Now run Pocket Killbox:

Choose Tools -> Delete Temp Files and click Delete Selected Temp Files
Then after it deletes the files click the Exit (Save Settings) button.

NOTE: Pocket Killbox will only list the added files it is able to find on the system. So when you do the below, if some files do not show in the list after pasting them in, just continue..

    • Delete on Reboot
    • then Click on the All Files button.
    • Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):
    • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.
    • Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click OK at any PendingFileRenameOperations prompt (and please let me know if you receive this message!).
If Killbox does not reboot or you get a Pending Operations type error message just reboot your PC yourself.

    Now boot into SAFE MODE

Now run CCleaner. If you have Windows XP delete the contents of C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch.

Then, as an added precaution, Go to Start -> Run and type: cleanmgr and then click OK. Make sure the boxes for these are checked:

    Temporary Files
    Temporary Internet Files
    Recycle Bin

    And Click OK.

    Click Start -> Run
    Type cmd
    click "OK"

    A "DOS" windows will open:
    Type copy "C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386\ndis.sys" "C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\ndis.sys"
Keep the quotes exacty as they appear.

    REBOOT to Normal Mode.

    Post the following logs:

Make sure to tell me how things are wotking.

I did all the steps before the one telling to reboot in safe mode. I cant get in it. all is fine to point where windows starts loading the file SPTD.sys saying: "Press ESC to cancel loading SPTD.sys". then my computer just reboots and does this all the time.. none of the options about safe mode works they all do the same. so i wasnt able to replace the ndis.sys...
Why cant i get to safe mode? and is it possible to do this file replace somehow in normal mode?
edit: i didnt press the ESC when told. just waited. AntiVirusShield is telling me: "deleted: Trojan program Trojan.Win32.Agent.afg File: C:\WINDOWS\system32\totour.exe/PE_Patch.UPX/UPX" and this totour is found every time i boot and run virus check. even if i have deleted it before...

OK, just skip Safe Mode for the moment. There is a copy of ndis in teh dll cache and Windows will replace it automatically.

Go ahead and give me the logs I asked for earlier from Normal Mode,
